dog running
i was just wondering how many people on this site run dogs?
|
RE: dog running
I don't for deer. It's only legal in about 3 or 4 counties in NC anyway.
|
RE: dog running
in virginia its legal but i dont do it just because of the fact of i dont see it as "real" hunting... making the dogs do the work... that doesnt mean i believe it shouldnt be done if it puts meat in the feezer... but i dont do it
|
RE: dog running
When I was younger I used to run dogs with my uncle, now that he has passed and I am a lot older I don't have the energy to run them any more. We didn't road hunt when running dogs, we ran too, just not as much as the dogs!:D
|
RE: dog running
i guess the main reason why i dont like it is because where shotgun stalker(new member and good buddy of mine) hunt the guys are basically a$$es and hunt from the road and that good stuff and it really annoys us...
|
RE: dog running
there not allowed here. I was always told that if i saw a dog chasing to shoot them.
|
RE: dog running
if the dog comes on my buddies uncle land then they.. or i... will shoot the dog... unless of course it a big deer that the dog is chasing
|
RE: dog running
I was always told that if i saw a dog chasing to shoot them. Now, I do have rabbit dogs. But we must use commen sense and don't hunt rabbits until deer season is over, unless we know the land and the owners VERY well. We hunt our land during deer season, but no land we are invited on until after deer season. Some pups will run deer even after being trained as a rabbit dog. Deer scent is more dominant. |
RE: dog running
I was raised on deer hunting with dogs. Although I don't do it anymore with regularity (I did go once this year), I have alot of respect for most of the folks who choose to deer hunt this way. Many of them hunt this way because it's just plain fun, you get to see alot of deer, you get to hear the dogs run when you don't see them, etc. As a group of hunters, there is no more comradery and friendship in hunting camps than there is in a dog hunting camp in my view.
On the other side, I can agree that some dog hunters do stupid and illegal things, just like some hunters of any other type. I wouldn't hunt with those guys. Also, it really isn't hunting, the dogs are hunting and you are shooting if the opportunity presents itself. But it's a perfectly acceptable form of deer hunting in my book if you choose to hunt that way. |
RE: dog running
It is illegal to hunt deer with dogs here in Texas, but it still goes on!
I didn't mind it so much, if people would have just kept the dogs on their own property! I know the dogs don't know property lines, but the owners did! |
RE: dog running
using dogs is the only way to get deer moving late in the season. esp when hunting in planted pines and thickets. it can be fun and you dont have to be in the woods an hour before sunrise to hunt them. you can have a nice breakfeast and start hunting after that. my biggest gripe is that SOME so called hunters will let there dogs loose on land they dont have permission to hunt.
THAT IS TRESPASSING! |
RE: dog running
if people like it go for it, i grew up dog hunting in Florida, now i not crazy about it but if people do it go for it, its illegal here in north ga.
|
RE: dog running
I love to hear the dogs run. And no its not the same skill as still hunting.(that I reserve for bow hunting) But to hit a deer on the run does take skill!
|
RE: dog running
I grew up still hunting but had alot of friends who hunted with dogs and about 10 years ago I went and have been hooked ever since. Like alot of folks have been saying I love just to hear the dogs running, nothing like the sound of a hot trail just after first light!
I do agree there are some out there who ruin the sport of hunting by calling themselves hunters when all they are is someone who poaches (be it by running dogs or even still hunting on someone elses land you dont have permission to be on or by breaking laws in general). I do not agree with the hunters who drop their dogs on someone elses land and go aroudn the other side or then go onto their property to wait for the game to be pushed to them. Nor do I agree with shooting a deer while it is crossing a public road in order to catch the dogs or kill the deer. The groups I hunt with are pretty strict about if someone has to go out onto the public road to try to cut the dogs off before they get lost or onto someone elses property that they leave any weapons they have with another club memeber who remains on the property. That way if they are seen and or stopped by anyone they can not be accused of trying to "hunt" from the road.. they are just catching their dogs. I know in Va it is VERY illegal to shoot any domesticated animals including sporting dogs. I feel very strongly about someone who would take the life of any domestic animal when it is doing something that is its natural habbit to do. I do disagree with people letting dogs out on someone else property, but it is not the dogs fault.. they only do what is natural...I know that sometimes I have been hunting and the dogs have gotten away from us and headed in a direction there was no way to stop them quickly, that does not mean they were dumped there nor should they but killed for it. Like I said they are doing what is natural, now if I am hunting and know there is someoen dumping dogs where they are not suppose to and the dogs come onto the property then if it is legal I will try to harvest the deer and then catch the dogs or just try to catch the dogs. I then turn the animals of to VADGIF and let inform them of what is going on and let them handle it. SOrry to be long winded but I see no sense in kiling an animal that is doing what is natural for it when it is the owners fault, now I have seen some so called hunters that I would love to string up or put a load of buckshot in their truck. I understand the anger from being on a stand and having a dog come through but to tell you the truth I have never seen where it hurts much, actually it has striied the deer up and got them moving aroudn and helped me before. Dont get me wrong I love to still hunt and always will but there is a part of me that knows there is nothign like a beagle that is crying out in the crisp morning air. JMO |
RE: dog running
ORIGINAL: farmcntry I don't for deer. It's only legal in about 3 or 4 counties in NC anyway. I started deer hunting with dogs. I still enjoyed it but it isn't the challenge that other forms of deer hunting provide. But there is nothing like a good chase. |
RE: dog running
we use dogs up here in huntsville ont. during our 2 weeks of gun season and im proud of it
pat:) |
RE: dog running
In Utah you can get a ticket for having any dog that somewhat resembles any type of hunting dog if you also have a rifle, muzzleloader, or bow in your car as well.
|
RE: dog running
the thing with dog hunters that i do not like... simply because of the ones around where i hunt... is that they make complete a$$es of themselves and their unethical... they dont care about any hunters but themselves... they run dogs through the woods and out from one side of the road to the other... which is illegal here... and half the time they go out n the woods drunk... i dont mind a can after the hunt but deffinently not during it... they just dont seem to care about anyone but them selves!!!

RE: dog running
yah the ppl who hunt the property next to ours are usually hammered on there stands and for years weve been having to kick them off of our property...pisses me off
|
RE: dog running
main reason beind me disliking them...but hey dont get me wrong... dog runners do kill deer
|
RE: dog running
Here in Fla.it's legal.I was in my first dog hunt last month and it was fun. These guys use beagles. They don't really run the deer just kind of push them.Like I said it was fun.I've also seen the other kind of dog runners, drop them anywhere and just let them run.

ORIGINAL: webejonesin2 I was always told that if i saw a dog chasing to shoot them. |
RE: dog running
I used to hunt with dogs when I was younger and thats how I killed my first two deer. This year is the first year I hunted without dogs late in the year. We had poor luck without. We stand hunt early. I plan to get two beagles puppies and I can't wait til next year to try them out.
|
RE: dog running
hammer I would reccomend short leg beagles, they will push the deer all day long, but they don't run fast enough to make the deer run hard, usually the deer will be at a trot or brisk walk instead of a dead run like they will with long legged hounds.
|
RE: dog running
I just think its the person/people runnin dogs. Cause where i hunt i cant stand them they are always drunk,on our property, or runnin deer away from us! and countless other things. Theres a hunt club up at my g-pas and i think like 11 people were hunting one day and they had like 26 deer from one piece of property thats bout 200 acres and I know that theres not alot of deer there so they just kill deer just to kill stuff. But on the other hand on of my good friends runs dogs and hes cool so I just think it depends on the people.

RE: dog running
mow em down.... I understand you pain... there are dog owners or groups that use dogs that I can not stand myself. I woudl love to see them loose their land or their rights since they are very rude and illegal at times. I dare not call them hunters since they are the ones who tarnish the name of hunters...I too might have been known to enjoy a few cold ones once the day was done and I was back at home or at a friends where we talked about the day and skinned deer if we had any.. but not at all in the woods..nothing but coffee, water and pepsi for me out there!!!
MOTurkeyTammer..... SO you agree that it is right to destroy someone elses property?? I know in alot of states hunting with dogs is illegal and in such cases yes there is no need for a dog to be in the woods(unless a traking dog for wounded game where legal). But it is not the dogs fault that he is there, he is only doing what is natural and what he was trained to do. 100% of the resposibilty lies upon the owner or whom ever turned the dog out. There are much better and ethical means to try to resolve the situation rather than to kill a innocent animal. Yes he may be doing something you dont agree with or that messes up your hunt but its not worth killing him. It is also very illegal to do so, and I have turned in other hunters I have been around who have shot someones dog while we were still hunting and no I do not regret it! This is action or thinking or lets kill the dog when we see it running a deer is nothign but more fuel for the anti's. How can we try to show we are the ehtical group that most of us are (and the ones who arent are nothing but poachers) when we go around killing domesticated animals.. I am not trying to beign a argument but just tryign to show there are better ways to handle it and to try to get people to stop and think how it looks to the public both non hunters and antis, it would be a sure fire way to turn a non hunter who was not anti into a full out anti by killing pets! Hammer... I am with Taz.. get a couple of bench leg beagles.. they dont run very hard at all and they are easy to keep uo with and catch before they get away from the group. You might want to also consider bird dogs.. alot of people I know are only keeping a small group of beagles for running big deer that got away. They have switched to useing bird dogs and doing man drives. By useing them it cuts down on the number of drivers needed so there are more standers and less of a chance of a dog gettign away which with this style very rarely happens. The bird dogs make their normal circles just like they were looking for birds, they get into the briar thickets and thickets.. when they jump a deer the sight chase it or wind chase it meaning they only run it a few hundered yards(most of the ones I know dont go over 200 yards very often) then they stop and come back to the driver and start making circles again. This way the deer are not run to death they are only jumped up and stirred up enough that after the dogs drops them the often stop running and try to sneak out of the woods past the standers which allow for less running shots and less stress on the animals. It also improves having dogs get away and onto someone elses lands and ruining their hunt! Shotgun.. I do agree alot of the clubs overkill alot of deer. I am all for fillling your freezer and giving some to hunters for the hungry, but there is a point where it is senseless to kill more than you or your family can use, unless it is being done under a damage permit to help with damage! |
RE: dog running
I agree that it depends on the group of hunters that are running the dogs. I hunt in Va and we run dogs in every organized hunt during the season. I love it and I believe that we do it correctly and legally. I do know of people in the county that are not liked because they road hunt and do not care ahat land they run their dogs on, I disagree with the way they hunt and I can see that they could give us a bad name. Do it right and on your land and I think it is fine.

RE: dog running
That's the best way to do it, although I do climb in a treestand from time to time. I have a pack of dogs myself and am trying to sell a few right now. I don't mix alcohol with hunting at all, but will pop a top when trying to catch dogs after dark once in a while. As for my dogs going on other people's property I (and the people I hunt with) try our best to keep the dogs away from property lines.
The club I hunt is about 11,000 acres and all in one big block, and most of the private property around it belongs to members so we can hunt all of it. Like I said, when done right it's the best way (in my opinion). |
