I bet that stone age guys would call using a bow vs spear "not hunting" for the same reason.
I just don't like laws and regs that dont make sense. If they want to cull the herd, let us cull the dman herd in whatever way does it most humanely. If shining blinds them and the freeze, then you have a much better chance of a good kill shot. Oh well, it wouldn't be the first time that I thought a law was stupid, lol. |

No sheit Sherlock, and that's exactly why it's illegal to do it and it's not stupid, but it sounds like you might be bordering on it, LOL!!! |

I live and hunt in Ohio. Spot Lighting deer is against the law. Anyone taking taking game by any manner other method than legal, ethical methods flat make me sick to my stomach. And since their is always a few bad apples messing things up for honest folks. I know this law will never change. I have often thouhgt how fun it would be to drive around with a spot light to see the deer. Just for the sheer enjoyment of watching them. Guess I'll never know.:(

If the goal is to cull the herd by x units, then it makes no sense to restrict how it's done, so long as only x units are culled. However, if it's about the challenge of "outsmarting" the deer, then well, OK, but then why allow any modern technology? Ooh. I know. It's about MONEY. Because you pay for the right to kill 2 (or more) deer every year but you don't always get one. And just because I think a law is stupid doesn't make me stupid. The very fact that I question the logic of a law proves that I'm not. I have never seen a good explanation as to WHY it's illegal. I hear people saying that "shining isn't hunting," but how is that really any different than baiting? Yet plenty of people bait..... Seriously, I'm new to hunting. Educate me. WHY is it so wrong? What is the GOAL of herd management? Herd size? Challenge? Money? Explain. |

So... Nobody wants to explain WHY, just keep quoting the law?
Sheep. I never said I will violate the law....but I sure would like to know WHY. |

Spot lighting makes it very convenient for poachers, so it is either banned or restricted to earlier hours to make it easier to monitor for violations. Hunting with a spot light would be insanely dangerous - a home behind your deer with lights out would be catching your bullets. Hunting safety rule: Clearly identify what is behind your target!
