Charlie-

I mean that a stripmall/parking lot/superhighway is a barrier to deer movement. I'm not suggesting that they won't or can't move through it, but I'm betting not as a first choice. The public land I'm referring to holds deer because its a long skinny park that runs along a river, which "funnels" them. All of the construction/development/buildings/etc. Given a choice, the deer will stick to what woods they have left.

I'm simply saying that fences and development are both man-made barriers for deer - the fence just has a specific purpose.
difference being grizzly is that we don't purposely put up strip malls and developments to impeed deer movement. It's out of our control. The fence you have a choice in putting up or not. You bring up a good point. It's more of a shame with all the developments going up and reducing the land and habitat for deer. Now we want to take it one step further and take the ones that do have room to freely roam and lock them up too?? Heck lets put them all in a pickel. Cage em all why don't we?

Now, since I'm fairly new around here - do you hunt other areas/other states? I'm simply saying that fences and development are both man-made barriers for deer - the fence just has a specific purpose.
Grizzly I have hunted outside of Va. but only a few times while I was in the Air Force. I goose hunted in Colorado and hunted blacktail in California for a week. 99% of my hunting has been in Va. I have hunted the suburbs a few times, but the place I hunted was totaly screwed up by the last hurricane that came through, the area I have permission on is very narrow and a ton of big trees coming down forced the deer to bypass the area. I am with you on not finding any challenge in hunting an area where you have 50 deer a day coming by, I won't lie though, it would be fun to do every once in a while! I have hunted the mountains of Va. a little, the George Washington National Forest, down in the northern neck which is tidewater, outside of Frederickburg in some farm country also.

How's this sound there's a WMA near here that's about 10,000 acres with a state park near by where we can rent some cabins. We'll all sit around the camp fire drink some beer some smoke a few cigars and hit some deer with kegs. How's that sound.

Charlie I don't know about Griz, but I would like to do that during the off season, if I am not mistaken you don't even need a license for throwing kegs at deer do you? Oh yea I could handle a few of the stogies and beer also.

NYB I might try reprogramming the feeder or maybe just put a remote on it to where I can feed him when I want to! Tell your wife I will have to check out a new chair, I have been using the same one all season and I know it is time for a new one!

RE: Poll on hunting in high fences.

NY Bowhunter- I appreciate your point. I would not like to hunt in a pen either. I guess another way I could say it is that not all public land is the untouched wilderness that we all would like, and some of the large ranches may offer a better hunting scenario than some public land. 10000 acres of private land vs. a 300 acre patch of public land is what I'm saying. Urbanization affects it greatly around here, and not all public land is created equal. Here's a disturbing thought - will we have to rely on large private ranches someday if public land shrinks?

BTW, the place that I'm talking about is made up of zones of ~300 acres each and only a portion of that is wooded. I didn't mention that before.

Taz- Hold on! I'm not ragging on you. In fact, I've been practicing keg-throwing at my 3d archery target for the past month! :)

TROPHYHUNTR

This is my last post on this topic CharlieP and Nybowhunter abviosly think that all ranches that are fenced in you walk up and shoot your deer and you are done, damn are you guys wrong, I know people who hunt high fences are not all american hunters like youll neither, but i hunt them 7-9 days a year in texas
What was your sucess rate in texas this year? I think you said you shot 1 large buck and two does. You father also shot a large buck if I recall as well.

We dealt with the full moon and 40 mph winds
You said in the texas results post you saw between 100-125 bucks in a week. So how many deer would you have saw with a favorable moon and 5 mph winds? So how is this not "shooting fish in a barrel" or a "canned hunt"?

Trophyhunter my # is 69!!!! Where did you hunt in Va.? The craziest hunters I ever saw were in Mendicino National forest in Ca., these boys idea of hunting was 5-6 guys riding in the bed of a pickup cruising the mountain roads throwing their empties in the ditch!!!
