Default My buck from Dec. 6, 2003

Today was the last day of our rifle season and me and a friend were hunting 2 miles from my house. We could see lots of big bucks but they were not heading our way. We had 10 does and a few small bucks come within shooting range but nothing worth shooting. We could see more than 100 deer in the pasture that we were hunting but we had no chance of getting close. We decided with 20 minutes left of legal time to walk back to the truck. As we neared the truck we could see 25 deer about 200 yards away. They spooked and that is when we noticed this buck. We could tell something was wrong though when he stumbled and fell. Through my spotting scope I could see that his front leg was broken at the shoulder and he could barely run so I decided to take him because he wouldn't have made it through the winter. He isn't a big buck, just a young 5x4, which I wouldn't have shot if he hadn't been wounded but I guess I didn't get skunked. Here are some pics.

Congrats on the buck, from the number of deer you are seeing you should be killing every deer you can to cut down on the numbers.

The problem is, I can only get 1 tag a year and the hunting pressure around here has dropped drastically in the past few years. I only saw 4 other hunters this year from September to December and they were all driving around

Good night man you should become a guide!!!! If the pressure is that low and you have that many deer!! I can legally kill 3 buck and over 100 doe in Va. and we don't see that many deer!

Congrats, had some great genetics and would have been soemthing in a few years by the looks of him...you did the right thing though Did you find out how he broke his wheel?(fight, bullet, etc)

Deer are yarded up in your area already or is it due to pressure onto limited pressure land?

It looked to me like he was caught in a fence. The hair was missing from a 2" section of his leg just above the knee.

Hey, that's a great buck, even if he is a bit young. And you certainly did the right thing by taking him out of the herd. It's better to make a clean kill and put him to use rather than allow him to remain and (most likely) starve to death slowly. He should make for some tasty venison!
