away at college and hunting

As of now I am going to a local college. Next fall I plan on going away to a different college thats 3 hours away. For you guys that were in college and were few hours away from the woods you hunt in did you come back every weekend to going hunting?

I' m about 4.5 hours away from home. I go home about one weekend a month to hunt, otherwise I do some waterfowl hunting in ND. I' m really lucky because I have permission to bowhunt some private land, about 50 acres or so, about 25 minutes from campus. I would suggest looking for public or private land near school, that way you' ll get to hunt more.

As far as going home I tend to do it alot. I make the trip everyweekend that i can during deer and rabbit season. i love to hunt and i dont really know were to go up here and i dont really have alot of time. So I just wait for the weekend and head out on my 2 1/2 hour trip.

I am 3 DAYS from home. So I have no choice but to hunt here. The land is all public. My room mate and I hunt chucker, phesant, blue/ruffed grouse, duck, and dove. I also got a mulie. And we are going to apply for spring turkey.

But I am sick of not being able to hunt at home, so I am going to take next fall semester off and hunt every day.

college sux.

I' m a junior in college. I' m an hour and a half from home. However, I go to college in southwest Oklahoma. I just found myself some land to hunt here, about 15 minutes from my university! so I go about 2-3 times a week if I want.

Nope, haven' t been to college since the 70' s. If you are goiung to college now, you wouldn' t remember the 70' s except for That 70' s show on TV.

Anyway, I didn' t hunt game back them, only women and not with a gun.

I came home a good bit when I first went away to school but I found some places real close to campus to hunt. Matter of fact I could walk out my dorm to my hunting spot, and managed to shoot a doe.

I guess I could find a area to hunt close to campus. I dont want to have my hunting equipment down on campus. Plus I am to cheap to buy a hunting license. Its nice haveing your own woods that family owns and dont need a license. I just hope I dont get talked into just staying and drinking the whole weekend.

I went to college in West Virginia the late 70s. I didn' t hunt but I was friends with several staff members who did and could have gone hunting if I were a hunter back then. I was introduced to black powder at college, and hard to believe now, we actually shot our guns on campus, in a field next to the library.

Can you keep your bows and guns in your dorm? Deerhunter why don' t you need tags at home?

If you own your ground you dont need to buy deer tags.:D

You should be able to keep your guns/bows at the campus police station, and get them 24-7.

When I' ve been away at school I' m only about 45 minutes from my house, this semester I took my credits externally and worked full time and stayed home so needless to say my dreams of being able to hunt a little more didn' t pan out. The place I go to school has alot of hunting oportunities within 15 minutes of campus and its pretty pro hunting, they even have an official wild game cleaning room.
I' ve done it both ways and it ended up working out that it was more relaxing hunting by school, and alot easier cause you could just go when you had the time.

Oh, it sucks being so far from home. I' m four hours away. Last year I went home a lot during hunting season. But now I go every month or so. I would hunt here, but it' s out of state and I don' t have that kind of $$. Oh, well, I guess I can deal with it.

I go to university about 2.5 hours from home. From september to december i usually go home every weekend to hunt unless i have too much work to do. I get a little bit of hunting in the city. i have permission to hunt on a piece of land just south of the city for mulies so i hunt that usually twice during the week. I just try to get all my assignments and studyin done in the week so when friday afternoon rolls around i' m in a treestand rather than a library.

I think that would suck to have to keep all of that equipment in a policestataion. Theres no way I' m storing thousands of dollars of equipment with someone I don' t know. So deerhunter are you saying your poaching these deer, or do you legally not have to buy tags? Because if you like hunting then you might as well buy tags to support the DNR so they have money to provide the privliges you take for granted.

I just finished college and although hunting was all I wanted to do, it was hard to get out there and do it w/ all the things pressing for my time in school. Where I was at there was thousands of acres of public land, so that was nice. If we were full-time students we could get in-state hunting licenses and not have to pay the big bucks as if we were nonresidents. If you haven' t checked into this and are paying for nonresident licenses, check on it. I am assuming quite a few states do this as my home state and the state where I went to college both do this.

I went to college in Duluth, MN back in 1982 to 1984 after attending junior college near home. There I was about 1.5 hours from home but managed to sneak back quite a bit in the fall to grouse/duck/goose hunt and then deer hunt as well. If I would' ve been too far then I' d definitely look for land around that location. May find it' s better than you expected and you' ll find another great experience. Get out and knock on a few doors as the worst they can say is " No" ....

I' m an hour and a half from home, but even if I were 3hrs from home, I' d still go back there to hunt (I' ve also got to go back almost every weekend to work around the ranch though). It gets to be pretty expensive driving back and forth all the time, but when I really think about it, the money I spend on gas would have been spent on food for the four days I' m home (I come back monday mornings and leave friday afternoon, I eat a ton before I come so I don' t have to eat that day again, and fast until I get home on fridays)...so it comes out about even, and I get to get out of the city and do all the hunting that I can.
