This is the result of a broken nose during a fight, hit buy a car, ect., but most likely a fight with another buck. I used to raise dall sheep and they would do the same thing from fighting, once we turned the rams loose together with the ewes. Chances are, the nose will also have a bend one way or another the length of the muzzle. This effects the breathing thru the nose in sheep for a few days, but then, after the internal swelling goes down, they are fine. I suspect the same healing process in deer as well.

i saw a buck just like that at a checking station here in baltimore last year. some guy from DNR said it was a rare deformity coused by an infection from a bug bite that causes the nose to swell and get deformed at a young age while bones are soft. it really does look like a horse' s nose and it even has those large elongated nostrils. im not saying that this buck couldnt have been in an accident, but i am just relating that there have been known cases of that deformity for another reason

I saw another deer with an eye that was swolen almost completely shut and watering like crazy. He must have gotten an antler in the peeper.
