Default 7pt First buck

Well I saw 5 deer yesterday. I had deer around from start to finish, but the bad part is I was only there a little over an hour. Anyway First thing I saw 2 big deer on the next little ridge over. One was a doe and I don’t know what the other was. The doe started coming to me but eventually disappeared. Then a few minutes later out of now where two tiny deer appeared right in front of me, It was a fawn and a button buck. They stood 15 yds in front of me for about 20 minutes. It was great! I loved just watching them. Finally they left. Then it is starting to get darker (not dark just darker) I knew I was going to have to get down in the next 10 min and then I just happened to catch a movement on the next ridge over. It was a deer. It looked like he was heading my way but I had doubts it would come all the way up the steep ridge to make in shooting range. Well I lost sight of it. Then I hear Crunch….Crunch…. Crunch. I stand up and turned around then out of nowhere there’s the deer. It' s a buck!!! Well needless to say to anyone that knows me but I got a little nervous. I wasn’t sure how big the rack was but I could see the main beams but I couldn’t see any tines. I didn’t care. This was my first antlered deer. I put the sights on his front shoulder (I thought anyway) and BOOM! He ran three steps then all I heard was leaves rustling. He was down. Called Dayton (ranger690) to get out his stand and come help. Went back to the truck and got some lights then the search was on. I told Ranger it would be an easy track. I was wrong (sort of). There was very very little blood. We found a few drops and a couple big splatters. We looked and the 2ft blood tail just didn’t lead anywhere. I was starting to get worried, but since I heard him go down I knew he was there somewhere. So I decided to walk back towards my stand a little bit. I took 5 steps and there he was!!! I couldn’t believe it when I saw that deer lying there, I had just killed a BUCK!!!! The deer was huge!!! At least that’s my perception. The body on this deer was the biggest I have ever seen. I was so excited. I immediately began counting points. 1,2….7….where’s the 8th? Oh well. I am very excited. Now for the bad part. We were standing there looking at him and I said lets see where I hit him. Looked around didn’t see anything. So we rolled him over and all the blood was around his rear. I hit the deer in the butt. I was so disappointed in my shot! I don’t know what happened. I hit the artery though and he bleed very good just all internal. Just to clarify, He was broadside for the shot. I didn’t shoot him facing away. So that’s my story.

This deer was killed east of Richmond, Virginia.
