my closest shot ever

what is the closest shot u have ever taken with the gun. yesterday we show up to hunt to find that the 2 stand we were gonna hunt out of were taken, so i took the 1st stand, a ground blind 100 yards from the road for the 74 year-old that hunts with us. as i sat, i didnt expect to see anything, so i was watching the squirrels. i just happened to looke back and catch a glimpse of an approaching deer. as i got my gun up, i looked up to see a small doe looking at me from the trail i used to get to the stand. she looked at me for 2 minutes and then walked directly away from me and circled down wind. my "real scents" curiosity scent got his attention and he walked to ten yards with his nose in the air. when he turned broadside to me, i fired and the 20 gauge slug knocked down the button buck. i almost took another shot at a bigger doe, but i decided that dragging one deer was enough. i paced it out and the deer was standing at 12 yards broadside, my closest shot ever.

The first buck I ever shot, was about at 6 yards off. Didn't think it was too big a deal at the time, unitl my father let me know how unusual that is. I was 12, and the deer approached me from behind, quartering away right to left. It was dry, and I heard the leaves cracking under its feet before I seen the animal. I thought it was another squirrel, so I wasn't too excited until it passed my tree that I was sitting at the bottom of about three yards away! Then I froze and started to get nervous, the deer walked directly in front of me, and I placed the shot right behind the left shoulder. It went about 15 yards before it fell. I don't know why, but ever since then I have been lucky at taking deer and turkey both at close range. Most of my turkeys that I have taken have been within 20 yards, due tho the fact that I set the decoys up at 10 yards.

The closest shot i've made was about 5 yards on a button buck. I've had deer even closer but passed on them. I could see the eyelashes on those two. It was cool because as soon as I shot I could see the hair split behind the shoulder.

I shot almost straight down to kill one a while back with a rifle. The deer fell 3 steps from my tree.

Greets,
Well, I shot my closest, a nub yearling I thought was a doe, at 20 yards or so, spooked him while walking back to the rig, he spooked me too! only shot I ever took on a running animal, got him but I dont recomend it to others. (incidentally, at that range the 200gr softpoint 7.62x54R out of my Nagant M44 carbine blew a whole lot of him out, went down spinning from the impact.)

Just my uneducated opinion!

I killed a nice 7 point at, no kidding, 3 steps. I was on a logging path and I was on one side of a tree and he was on the other. With a 12 gauge when I got the gun up he looked at the gun and not me and stood there until I fired. I shot the whole front of his chest off, he still went back in the woods about 50 yards. I could not beloeve it. This was 15 years ago and I have not had any kind of deer that close again.

I have had them come by me during a drive as close as 10yds, and had to let them get farther out to take the shot in my scope.

man i feel like a murderer!!! mine was about 4-5 feet! me and my dad were walking out down a mountain on the first day of buck season/youth buck or doe season...i had a doe tag for the county...and we were walking donw the mountain...not 150yds from the lil dirt road...i seen what i thought was a yote...i was like dad! a coyote...no a doe...no a coyote! hes like its a doe...i was already on my knee..and we were behind a big tree...the deer had no idea we were there...and looked at me rite b4 i let one fly...a 180gr corelokt nailed it from 4 ft from my muzzle!! it flopped over got up and stummbled down the mountain...and didnt make it 60 yds...had no lungs...so it was jsut a crazy last energy burst...turned out to be a button buck...

First--way to go on shooting a button buck in Feb! That's one less buck you'll see in the Fall. Hopefully NJ will eliminate the late-late season as it's proving to be a disaster on the buttons and shed bucks.

Now--my closet shots have been about 10 yards and that includes the last 2 bucks w/shotgun in NJ. My scope was practicall useless!

Well said, keep killing all the buck fawns in Jan/Feb, and see what we have next year...
Mine was about 10ft, straight down.

My closest encounter was at about 2-3 ft., though I couldn't get off a shot being that close. I was on a bow hunt in South Texas sitting in a bush that someone had cut out a hole in to sit inside and then cut some very small shooting holes. A big Doe stopped directly in front of the bush and put her head inside one of the holes and stayed there for about 2 min. looking at me from about 2-3 ft.. It was really hard to hold perfectly still for that long and I never got off a shot but it was very unnerving staring into the eyes of a deer that close.

to let everyone know, i didn't have a clue it was a button buck. the guy who we hunt with loves little deer, so it was for him. the only reason i shot and am not mad that it was a button buck is because we are losing the property to builders. i at the tenderloins today, yum!

I took my Doe this fall at 15 yds. My partner had just fired 3 shots at the Buck and Doe a min earlier and she came down the runway right towards me. I was standing, wearing full hunter orange, (Ontario)and watched her in my red dot from about 75 yds. She turned at about 15 yds and she dropped like a sack of potates. I was watching her and in 30 sec the Buck came down the same trail. He turned when he was about 15 ft from where she lay and I shot him twice (308 win) but he never flinched. I found him about a 100 yds away. First Double Header! They sure make it easy when they are so close!

This past season I sat on a hill and watched a doe come down the far bank till she disappered below me, I heard her coming but couldn't do anything when her head popped up 5' from me - no anterless tag.
She snorted and took off, it was only then that I realized there was a buck hanging back on the opposite side, it was the only buck I saw last year, and I didn't even get a shot.

15 feet. I had drove my 4 wheeler right up to the stand, stepped from the seat onto the ladder to my stand. Had put doe in heat on side of motor before driving thru sage grass to the stand. The deer followed the scent right to the 4 wheeler. Sniffed all around it, I didn't know if he was gonna ride it out or what??? Finally moved a little where I could shoot without hitting the 4 wheeler. Looking straight down, I could see he was a button buck, and legal in that year. Had trouble looking thru the scope, couldn't see anything but hair, managed to put it in the boiler room.

I hunt on a Military base a lot and they have only a few doe days so I get thew chance to watch them a lot. I have had them sniff a bungee cord at the bottom of my tree stand several times.
Closest shot was 10 feet away. (6 point)

Right off the end of a long 12 ga. barrel. I had a doe stop about 10 ft. from me this year, close enough to see her eyelashes. Yes, that will make your heart pound.
