How does 20 ga. buckshot perform? Our club requires buckshot on all drives and my son will be shooting his 20 ga. this year. (10 years old) Anyone have experience with it? Is the range the same as my 12 ga.? Any input would be appreciated.

I have seen deer killed with a 20 gauge out to 50 yards but I would suggest that your son keep them closer then that. We had a 12 year old kill a monster 8 point at 60 yards, and it only ran 50 yards and died. I believe that to be an exception to the rule. Good luck and tell your son good luck as well.

Woops. I kinda missed the main question. I am sure 20 ga buckshot will work, you just have to find the best shell/choke combo and make sure he lets the deer come in close enough for your pattern.

I own a nice 20ga. And it will work just fine. Keep in mind that you will want to use the a good choke so you shots do not displace too much.
I at 50yrd your son with the right aim will take the game down.
Good luck!
