Whitetail deer Hunting Thread ???

I guess I am just plain getting old and out of touch---The headline here says Whitetail deer Hunting Thread---Why do I mainly see Electronics ???????????? Have the snow flakes taken over ? Have the younger generations turned to playing hunting with all their electronics ? Guess I am happy to be a dinosaur---I dont want the new Whitetail Deer Hunting !

younggun308 05-18-2017 06:03 AM

Define what you mean by "electronics" as it pertains to this site. Do you mean all the advertisements?

younggun308 05-18-2017 06:07 AM

I see what you're talking about, now. All the spam posts by fake accounts. I'm sure the moderators will clear those up, soon.

Topgun 3006 05-19-2017 10:10 AM

They are done by what we call Spammers and it keeps the MODs busy deleting/banning them when they show up!

Bocajnala 05-19-2017 07:43 PM

We do our best to keep up with them. I usually zap 4-6 a night. And CI and others get that many more in the mornings. If a mod doesn't log on and get rid of them, they stay up unil we do. We do our best to keep up with them, but none of us live on the site and sometimes it takes us a while to get to them. It's a constant problem and we're always looking for ways to eliminate it. But the spammers get paid to spam so they can be tough to keep up with.

I like this site but i seldom go to the deer hunting section because of this stuff.
This is the very worse site for this stuff and i can't figure out why that would be ?
I go to at lest 8 other sites and this is the only one with this problem so i have faded away from here after 20 plus years of hanging around !

Bocajnala 05-20-2017 02:46 AM

I understand that it might be annoying... but why would it keep your from a good website? If it's an electronic spam post, don't click on it. So you have to scroll past 6 threads to get to the on topic threads. It's not the end of the world. It is annoying. I get that. Not enough to keep me from coming to the page though. I believe I erased four threads tonight. We try to keep up as best we can.

Like mounting man said other sites doesn't have the problem. Seems to me it is a laxness of the admidstrators to add a feature that would stop the spammers in their tracks. I feel it also puts the mods thru stuff they should not have to and things slip by them while they are cleaning the spam post off.

Figure we already scroll pass all the sticky post then have to scroll past a bunch of spam post too, or at least sort out the good from the junk.

Like I said it could be fixed at sign up, like other sites have.
I also don't consider this the best site either.

If a few spam posts bother you guys that much you must be a bunch of weenies, LOL! I just hit the alert on them and keep on going to what I want to read or post on and I'd suggest you do the same and don't worry about things you can't do anything about!

Champlain Islander 05-20-2017 08:46 AM

We mods have asked Admin to implement some sort of anti spam software but thus far we are stuck with dealing with them. I delete and ban at least 2 to 12 every morning..many as they sign on and the thread never gets posted. I suspect many are posted by spambots so there must be software to reduce that. All good things take time is my motto. Have patience we will eventually get there.

TN Lone Wolf 05-20-2017 03:30 PM

Have you guys thought about adding one of those anti-spam word boxes that display a random series of funky looking letters to the sign up page?

On another website I frequent, the administrator apparently blocked access to the site from China. We don't get many spam posts anymore, so whatever he did worked.

Bocajnala 05-20-2017 03:46 PM

Ya, We've suggested that. A "Capcha" screen to login to prevent bots. Allot of our spammers come from India.

I still fail to see why they even post. What do they get out of it. It is rare that the post will remain more than a few hours and often it is deleted as soon as it appears. After looking at the spams and deleting them I look at who is on line and bag a few more before they even post. Whack a mole. I end up banning several hundred a month.

Topgun 3006 05-20-2017 04:29 PM

They probably get paid no matter how long a post stays up on a site as long as it gets posted.

I've noticed less posts in general. Used to be that yesterday's threads were on page 2 today. It appears to me this forum is losing readers. I come because I don't want to find another forum. If there are better, please let me know. A PM is fine.

The threads that bug me are titled "what bow do you shoot" then 50 people respond. It bothers me because the post where someone is asking for advice on how or where to hunt hogs in Texas (for example) receives few responses. I admit this is my sole opinion and not necessarily that of others as is certainly shown by those responding. But, I truly don't give a rats a$$ which bow you shoot.

Just like a TV channel, I am able to avoid the threads I dislike. So, it doesn't keep me away. It just amazes me how many respond to certain threads and how many won't provide useful advice to those requesting it.

IMHO most of the questions that don't receive any answers or very few is because there just aren't people that have done what the OP is asking or hunted where they are asking about. The example you gave about where to hunt hogs in Texas did not receive many posts because very few people pay to hunt down there because it's almost all private land hunting and the fees aren't what I would call cheap just to kill a pig or two.

I have run/moderated several Forums. The open setup of this forum causes a lot of the issues. The size of it also contributes. They could shut it down tight, but then it would basically die. These type forums pretty much operate on some core members that choose it for their primary forum, but the majority of the number of members are relatively non-participants when it comes to daily posting. In order to gain the new members that actually post you need a LOT of members coming and trying it out. Basically if you lock it down where a mod has to accept new member case by case the number of people that actually come back 1, 2 or 3 days later to see if they were accepted is less then 10% in my opinion. Also when you do that It slowly chokes the site to death. As the core members move on the other things or get busy in the off season the site loses content making it not as appealing to new members. FYI this is just my experience, but as stated before I have seen it happen many times.

On the larger sites I ran it was nothing to boot 70 spammers in an evening.

My hat is off to the mods here they do a good job.

I don't think most of them are even actual people, just programs.
