RE: sick of the modern world
I often dream of dissapearing into the woods for a while and living off the land. Problem is, if you do that these days you are considered a trespasser and a poacher, instead of a survivor. Things will unfortunately never be like they used to be.......it is a sad fact. I think I was born 100 years or more later than I should have been.

One word for ' ya Deerhunter1224: ALASKA
You said in a previous post you' d like to live off the land and do what you love? Your young and have got your life ahead of you? ALASKA, ALASKA, ALASKA. THey don' t call it the last frontier for nothing GO get a job with a guide service, timber company, or fishing boat, or rancher out west. But do it before you say the dreaded " I do" |

ORIGINAL: JD IN ALBERTA Can' t hate it too much...everyone on here is on a computer[:o] I know what you are saying though...things just seemed better back then. It' s really up to you to keep traditions alive. I make a habit of doing things as I was tought when I was a kid. Guy' s who go hunting with a cell phone in hand no longer come with me, I' ve found other people who like being in the wilderness to go with. Keep it real! JDinAB |
RE: sick of the modern world
Oh how I yearn for the" good ole days" . hear it all the time. Life then may not have had all the distractions as today, but easier, I doubt. Most folks today wouldn' t have a clue on how to make it back then. " what no MTV" , drivethrough windows, what do you mean " I" have to pluck my own chicken. We pay a price for these conveniences. I lived in the bush in Alaska for 10 years.72 miles by snowmobile to nearest village. Was life simpler? Deffinately! Easier, never. Always hauling water, cutting/splitting/hauling fire wood(about 15 cords per year), repairing things, low on salt--tough nuggies, want some chocolate--to bad. Wife having a baby--boil the water and pray to god. Chopped a finger off with the axe--deal with it. After all this, maybe just maybe you' ll have 1 or 2 hours a week to just enjoy relaxing. ...The good ole days, simpler maybe, easier...Never. " YOU" are the one that controls how your life is. Make your choices and play the cards your dealt! Happy Hunting! Steve

RE: sick of the modern world
Tazimna you are right. How many of us today could live like that. Someone said earlier about all of us here on our PC' s. It takes a special kind of person to live like that. My buddy in Ky could live like that. He is pretty much a hermit. He lives in a cabin that he built himself on the Cumberland river. He owns 70 acres. It' s way back in the wood off the raod. Even with all of that he is only a few minutes from a phone and a hospital so even he is not really living the life that you did. It sound nice to be worry free but you would have other worries.

RE: sick of the modern world
I' ve got to go against the grain here and say I love all the amenities of the modern world.
I do however have to add that hunting opportunites were a lot easier to find back then! A jar of jelly got you access to several thousand acres of prime hunting land. [:-] |
RE: sick of the modern world
I hate to see farm gound and woods get eaten up by development. For example there is this field, well was a field few years ago. You know what there is now. A feaken super Wal-mart. I dont like all these huge new builds going up all over. Heck there are a lot older builds that no one uses. They are just sitting there. Why cant they get rid of that old build and put the new one in its place. Pretty soon the whole world is going to be all black top. Trees will be a thing of the past and dirt will be.

You can live that way... Just got to do it. Take it step by step. Start getting rid of stuff. Turn off the T.V. Downsize your house. I strongly suggest book titled " Margin" it changed my life forever.
