Savage 30-06 with a 165 grain Remington Supreme coreloct softpoint.
I also do some hunting in Shotgun only counties. I have a little sweetspot I want to hunt that' s so thick you can' t get more than a 30 yard shot. I' ll be carrying a Mossburg 590 with 3" magnum 00 buck.

Topbuck I chose the 30-06 because it' s a versatile round. I can take anything from turkey thru bear with it. Ammo is available almost everywhere. It' s got a good range. I can shoot anywhere from 10 feet to 300 yards with it. ( if you are a true marksman you can take that weapon out to 600+ yards.) I chose between a 270, 30-06, and 7mm mag. Since I could only afford to buy one rifle, I went with the ' 06. There' s also the nastalgia of the round which has always appealed to me.

dpv, I can see your point. I was just making a comment about large caliber rifles being used to hunt deer, I perfer to use the smallest caliber possible, it' s like giving the animal a chance. It makes me take a well placed shot to effectively make a kill. I' m not against large caliber rifles, my other rifle is a 270 which is a sweet rifle, It' s just a personal preference.

Used my old trusty 61 yr. old .303 Longbranch, my moose and deer are already in the frezzer. Watched 2 of our guys with semi-autos banging them against trees trying to get them to work after they froze up, wonder why the old .303 never froze up or pickup the next round, might be cause someone' s life depended on it.

30-06, if it lives and breathes in North America it can be had by the old standby. Ma and Pa stores probably have a box of 30-06 bullets on the shelf next to the 270' s and 30-30' s. Throw in one of those slim jims and a couple of pickled pigs feet for the road!

My primary choice is a Remington Model 700 Mountain Rifle in .260 Remington with 125 grain Nosler Partition. God, I love that gun.

Secondary if I' m going to be making long shots and/or hog hunting is my old faithful BAR in .300 Win Mag with 180 grain Ballistic Silvertips.

Still debating, I love all my rifles soo much, but the opener comin up on Monday, I probably will have my Rem 7600 w/ me in .35 whelen, I have never had one run more then 25 yards, it is quite nice when hunting on public property. Later in the week I might have my Rem. 700adl in .270 out of my 700 in 6mm w/ me. It all depends on what feels lucky. Shoot straight!
