wind and deer hunting
Is a east wind good or bad to hunt in
|
what wind direction do deer move the lest
In my 40 years of hunting deer it's a no-brainer it's a east wind
|
N,E,S,W, there all bad and you should not be out hunting when the wind is blowing. And since the wind is always blowing it seems you should stay in and read hunting mags.
When fishing it is the east wind, Wind from the east fish bite the least. :D Al |
I've never let any wind stop me from hunting. Adapt and overcome. Wind is a natural part of the outside world. Just last week I was in my native CO and hunted in a wind that was blowing more than 20 mph. All that meant to me was the deer would be laid up in the draws keeping out of the wind, so that's where I hunted. This was the result:

IMO Some wind is better than no wind. You can get away with few more mistakes. Now if its blowing 30mph the deer will be bedded out of the wind as was said above. Here in Oklahoma 15 to 20 mph seems like the norm during deer season and I have even turkey hunted when there were gusts over 90+mph (blowing semi-trucks over on the highway). I'd say the best time to be in the woods is whenever you can.

East wind is good if you happen to be standing west of where you expect to see deer. It is bad if you happen to be standing east of where you expect to see deer. So scent is the only thing you should be concerned about.

A strong wind takes 2 senses away from deer which is part of the reason why they bed down (other than to just get out of the wind) - #1 they can't see movement as everything is moving, and #2 they can't hear as the woods are noisy from the brush and branches. IMO still hunting becomes your best bet....................
