The NC game department can help you out.

Where did you hear of this 10 foot above the ground law? I looked through the entire NC Hunting Regulations booklet online and didn't find any such thing. That 770 you bought is really considered a beginners rifle and based on many comments from people that bought or still have one it will not hold up to much use without various parts breaking or wearing out because of how cheaply it is made. It should do you fine for a year or two, but if you stay with hunting I'd be looking to upgrade to a better firearm.

There is no restriction to having to be in a tree stand or elevated 10 feet during rifle season. Whoever told you that is pulling your leg (to put it nicely). Here is NC's big game regulations and such. http://www.ncwildlife.org/Portals/0/...er-Seasons.pdf I would suggest you go to NC's hunting digest page and read the whole thing. I believe you will also need to take a hunters safety course in NC before you can get a license but I am not positive of that. BUT I recommend ALL new hunters take that course whether the state demands it or not.

Some counties or other local governmental units may have a restriction in the form of a local ordinance that restricts hunting methods. The 10 foot regulation may be silly but it does exist in some places. There are 10 foot above ground ordinances in some areas, but this is not a statewide regulation.
Search for ordinances in the areas that you intend to hunt, ask at the local sporting goods store, or phone the local warden for clarification. Asking for law clarification on an internet forum can quite obviously result in big problems due to misinformation. Good luck to you. |
Didn't think about special regulations areas Uncle. Thanks for reminding me. As far as I can remember, Virginia is the only one that has some city/district ordinances allowing for slug hunters ONLY if elevated 10 feet or above. I guess they think since you are elevated that the trajectory of the shot will be limited more in range since you will be aiming more downward. Probably other states/districts have that same misconception of safety. You would think if NC had any districts that had that regulation it would at least be mentioned in the Digest to look up.

it goes bang when you pull the trigger, the bullet goes where ya want it to, it will serve you well, its not a thousand round a year rifle but it will get it done.
some folks look at a rifle as a piece of art, some look at it as a tool, it will kill deer, that's the objective, you'll do fine with it. just look into the regulations, make sure your legal and enjoy. RR |
question
yea i know it`s not the best rifle but if all goes well and i like deer hunting i`ll go to a 700 - bein a VIETNAM VET ya think i`d know all about these guns but i only handled a machine gun so i`m learning all these calibers - some one said cause i am a vet and i went and got my conceel carry license maybe i won`t have to go to that saftey class - who know`s if i gotta go i`ll go - but for now that 770 shoot`s GREAT - the bolt`s a little sloppy but i`ll adjust after all it`s 1 bullet at a time

Standman, you will be required to attend and pass a hunter education course no matter how many or what kind of firearms you were trained to use. Hunting is a far cry from combat.
|
He may be beyond hunter ed cut off. Some states I have hunted in don't require if born before 1949.
|
That would put him in his late 60's or early 70's, I doubt anyone is going to start hunting at that time of their life. However if they did, they would be stupid not to take the class. Shooting fully automatic weapons in the military does not prepare one to be a hunter.

6ft. 3 - 250 lbs.

Well he could be in his late 50's and I don't see why some one even in their 70 could not want to take up hunting at such and age.
US pulled out of Viet Nam in 1975 figure a minium enlistment age of 17 gets you 58 years old. Regardless he bought a rifle and will probably have to take a hunters safety course since he is over the grandfather age for most states. He is also saying at 6'3" and 250 pounds the US Army felt he was a ideal candidate to carry a M60. :D Al |
Yooper, we were discussing someone of the age they would not need to take a hunter ed class, not just age.
|
66 yrs. old and if i have to take the class so be it - can`t be longer than the 8 hr. conceal class
|
Nothing wrong with a 770. I bought one for my kid to use, he decided he wasn't interested in hunting, so it's mine again. Surprisingly, it's one of the more accurate rifles I own, and it's seen it's share of usage.

You have a nice 300 yd. plus gun.
|
just gottA FIND OUT ABOUT BEIN IN A TREE STAND 10 FT. ABOVE GROUND TO SHOOT A 30-06

All you have to do is call your game agency and asked the question.

Or go online. There isn't a state game dept in the nation that doesn't have a website that shows the regulations. Maybe it is too hard to look up?

thats right [ shedding light on a subject does little for the blind ] and i feel blind right now

Problem with that is, and I just checked on this myself for fact checking, most of those sites, a lot of times, don't have district specific special regs like the 10 foot rule. Some do, like Virginia, but I could find no mention of it on the NC state site but it seems there are a couple of districts in NC that have it. Stupidity abounds!

the hunter i was talking to wouldn`t have been lying to me , he had no reason to - i can see a reason for the 10 ft. cause the bullet up 10 ft. will not travel as far as level ground but man it put`s a real damper on everything - would of bought blk. powder if i knew this -

I primarily bow hunt so about 85 to 90% of my hunting is from a tree stand as far as whitetail deer hunting. Pros: It gives you a better perspective (most times), gets you out of their USUAL sight line (don't let anyone fool you, deer do look up), makes your scent cone further out giving you a bit of a scent safe zone for the most part. Cons: Getting my fat arse up in the tree stand in the first place (I'm older than dirt so that's a double wammy), Packing a tree stand in and out, most stands are noisy putting them in, not all but most, kinda hard to get a better angle for a shot placement while stuck in a stand, you know, little difficult to step 3 feet to the right when that first step is a DOOZY :D , I actually know a fella that forgot he was in a tree stand when a 12 point monster stepped out and he tried stepping to the right to get a good shot angle :eek2: Luckily he caught himself, sceered the buck right out of the county though with his "OH CRAP". Took me a bit to stop laughing when he told me that story.

I heard of a guy down in Texas that was up in a tower stand with no sides on it that did the same thing when he saw a big buck and got all excited. Unfortunately the story was that he fell and broke both legs! |
