Show your deer rifle

Mine is 20 years old. It's a Ruger 77 stainless sythetic in .300 win mag. (Nobody else ever tags my deer!). I hated that old sythetic stock but the gun is a tack hammer. A couple years ago I had it restocked with a Boyd's laminated and had the Cabela's gunsmith pillar bed and glass bed the action and free float the barrel. I put an aftermarket lighter weight trigger spring in it and it's rare if I can't get all shots touching or in the same hole at 100 yards. A couple elk, black bear, numerous whitetail bucks and a Wyoming mule deer have fallen to it. None went more then five feet.

I'm sorry get of your assets and get a lot closer!

Exophysical 11-20-2015 10:04 AM

My main hunting rifle for the past decade has been a Ruger MkII stainless laminate in .270 win... nobody tags my deer either... or moose.. or elk.. or wolf

Oddly enough I don't actually have any picures of it with a deer!

Champlain Islander 11-20-2015 10:19 AM

Mine scoped deer gun is similar to sconnyhunters. Older model Ruger 77 Ultralite with a Zeisse 3X9 scope in 30-06. Killed a ton of deer, elk and caribou. I also use a "Benoit style" Remington 7600 carbine in 30-06 with a Williams peep and a fire dot front sight when hunting the thicker big woods of northern New England. No pictures though.

Why? Just because you aren't capable of doing it doesn't give you the right to criticize others who can.

Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean others shouldn't challenge themselves.:nonono2:

I consider what RR and others have accomplished in long range shooting as exceptional. To hone long range skills must take a huge investment on equipment and lots of time on the range.

Ohh, here we go again. Next he'll tell us he is capable of shooting that group at 1,000 yards, but chooses to not shoot at game over 65yards because he is a better sportsman and much more ethical. Keep poking holes RR.

Thanks guys, the gibbs is ready, I will be looking for my 29th harvest beyond 600 yards come Monday, most folks walk in the checking station and are asked by the locals "How big"? all I'm asked is how far?
sept 23rd I had one damage permit left, needed to fill it and a buddy wanted some meat, I talk LR shooting a lot, but shoot within a small group of about 25 people, they tell their friends, and most of it is dismissed as BS.
We were watching a rye field along a public highway in the eve, and deer were starting to appear, here comes 3 vehicles, aquaintences who stopped to see what was going on, guy asked ya groundhog hunting? nope, got to fill a deer permit. where he said, there were 4 deer in the rye, lazered a big doe at 682, set the scope, as the trigger broke I knew she was gonna be hit, at impact she hit the ground got up, ran to the field edge and fell.
as we were packing up, the 3 trucks drove away without saying a word, when we were driving to pick her up, my buddy was all smiles, I asked what? he said, the legend just grew some more!
good shooting all

RWK,
well I got off my assets, went the wrong darn way, I've probably walked farther to retrieve game than you hunt in a day!

The show us you deer rifles kind got lost in the fray here.

Champlain Islander 11-21-2015 05:41 AM

Yup but it is an old issue... one of which has generated a lot of discussion back and forth. I can't think of a shooting range in my state where I could even sight in at more than 300yds. I have seen some yote shows with long distance sniper type shots and find it fascinating. Just another aspect of pushing the limits and expertise into the stratosphere. OK my part of the hijacking is done. Back to the guns at least for me.

Ridge Runner 11-21-2015 06:06 AM

Meh, we all do things for different reasons, and I don't care how anyone hunts. Some guys drive their trucks down logging roads and jump out and shoot stuff off the hood, some guys throw out hay bales, some guys shoot them from long distances. I tend to understand RWK's stance more than any of the others.

I don't care how big or how far, I just ask "How", I want to hear a good hunting story.

Took me a second to figure out if that was a scruffy little ole yote or a deer :D I keep fergittin them little ole Virginia deer are some tiny little critters!

Champlain Islander 11-21-2015 01:33 PM

They are small in size but very tasty. One of my younger brothers lives down there and often brings up some for camp. Nice to have someone else provide the camp food for a change.:happy0001:

Super, don't kid yourself. The VA. species of deer is generally a smaller species but you'd be surprised how big some of those soybean, corn or peanut fed bucks can get. VA. can produce deer the majority of hunters on this site would be pleased with.

Champlain Islander 11-21-2015 01:51 PM

They do grow some impressive racks. Lots more food there than here and their winters are mild.

HeHe don't get me twisted Stalker, I've taken many Va and WV deer in my lifetime. I just like ribbing RR about them little critters. BUT on average, thems some tiny little critters. On the hoof, Tennessee deer aren't a whole heck of a lot bigger by average. My first Northern whitetail hunt (back in the stone age when I was a lad) opened my eyes to what a massive body whitetail looks like. When you are used to a 200 pound buck (live weight) being HUGE and you have a run in with a 320 pound fire breathing rutted up buck, you tend to change your opinion (as well as your drawers) on what a big deer is :D

Guess we'll just have to call smaller average deer size mostly a southern thing.

Yeah, yeah, Bergman and his rules.

Here's where we in the rest of the country make ourselves feel better by saying, "It's the experience of the hunt that's most important."
See, it all comes out in the wash. Have a good one.

I bought a Ruger M-77 in 1980, caliber is .243, it's the only centerfire I own...Funny, nobody else has ever "claimed" my deer either, it drops them on the spot when I want it to... ;)

It's killed a couple hundred deer so I doubt if I replace it anytime soon...But my real passion is flintlocks, I give talks on the American Revolution so I also use a .54 flintlock that I built in the '80s...

warbirdlover 11-27-2015 08:17 PM

I am hoping to get a Ruger No. 1 some day like rr's. In Wisconsin on public land (and alot of private) the only shot you'll get is 100 yards max and if you miss you won't get another. I know alot of guys carry auto's but just spray the deer and don't aim. A semi-auto can be good if you aim each shot but I just never cared for them although I've owned some in the past. I had a beautiful H&H Ultra semi-auto in .243. Most beautiful wood you ever saw and rosewood fore end cap. I should have never got rid of it.

Sheridan 11-28-2015 12:22 AM

NC,

The wood on that ML is exceptional !!!

I like rifles and have a 30 gun safe full and a few stashed in the ceiling joists here and there. Of course they are not all rifles either.

My first AND I still own it and use it is a Model 94 30-30

In 1970 I wanted some thing better to hunt moose with and got a Winchester Model 100 in 308 and came to dis like it being a auto loader then fear of it made me trade it off. It got replaces with a Remington 700 BDL in 243 I let a gun dealer talk me into ( Thank you very much Ray) which I came to love and use a lot.

In 1972 I once again wanted some thing for a moose hunt so ordered a Remington 700 BDL in 308.

My beloved wife over heard part of a discuttion I was having with my hunting partner so bought me a Remington 700 mountain rifle in 7mm08. I had really wanted a model 7 in 7mm08 I use it when I am hunting the beach or for shooting across cranberry bogs.

Model 7 Remington 7mm08, I use this one down in the cedar swamp so thick you some times have to about crawl to get thru.

I wanted a Remington 700 ML since I have came to like the Remington center fires I have so much. A 54 cal is all I could find at the time but later on I got a 50 cal.

Before my dad passed away he gave me his deer rifle I bought for him on his 61st birthday. It is a Ruger 77 tang safety in 243.

Yes I have shot a deer with every one of these rifles. Some like the 243 and 308 Model 700 and the model 94 30-30 have harvested at least 10 bucks each for me.
And I am not finished yet showing my deer rifles.

:D Al

Awesome guns Alleyyooper, i like rifles also, keep them coming.

Game Stalker 11-29-2015 11:47 AM

So far, the .308 parent case is represented well by you, yooper. People always want bigger/faster, but sometimes less is more.

Sgt Recoil 11-29-2015 11:49 AM

A few of my favorites

And lastly although not a rifle but I just bought it last Oct and dropped this guy with a Federal 3" 00 Buck

I took this girl out this fall but never connected with anything. Browning X-Bolt 280 Rem

d80hunter 11-29-2015 12:16 PM

This is my 450 Bushmaster. It has only seen one season. It will be the gun I grab when I need a deer hammer.

alleyyooper 11-30-2015 01:16 AM

Here is another Remington 700 my wife bought for me because she liked the wood on it. It is a 300 Win mag and I use it some when hunting the beach. does a fine job with a 165gr. sierra HPBT game king over a charge of IMR 4350.
