Have you guys ever had a deer look up at you in a stand and just walk away? Do they smell you are something? They look right up at me turn around and just walk away.

I had a doe look up at me once, then stomped her foot a couple of times. She gave up and slowly walked away.

RE: hey buddy what are you doing up in the tree
Last week I had a seven point look up at me over 5 times, at about 5 yds[:o]
Even with my unmatched designer camo:D - this younger buck never made me out. Then he just walked on off |
RE: hey buddy what are you doing up in the tree
I had a nice doe about ten yards from me bow her head up and down about a dozen times. And then walk around the blueberry tree in front of me. You kno what happen next....:)

Only when i wasnt wearing a face mask. If your face is covered up and they still bust you, your outline isnt broken up, they winded ya, or your moved at the wrong time.

RE: hey buddy what are you doing up in the tree
The old takle of deer not looking up is long over. In most of their range, we are their primary predator and we hunt in the trees. They may not notice us because we are still, camoflaged, have a good backdrop, and the wind is right, but they do indeed look up. From my stand, most notce something unusual but kepp moving about their bsuiness. I got burned this year by a young buck who came from an unexpected direction and crosssed my scent. The wind was blowing from me to him. He got nervous, looked right at me and hopped away. I had him grazing peacefully at about ten yards for twenty minutes earlier in the season. I guess we are even now.

Alot of time the deer will look up at you if you dont have any background cover around you. They still dont have a clue what you are but they know you shouldnt be there, any cover around that stand you were in?

There are quite a few deer that look at up. Sometimes i don' t notice it since i wasn' t looking directly at them at the time.

RE: hey buddy what are you doing up in the tree
I get a few deer to look up and bust me. Most go back to what they were doing, after a bit of investigating. My neatest encounter like this I had a big doe come to the base of my tree, sniff around and looked straight up at me. She went on alert and knew something was amiss. After what seemed like for ever she calmed some, and walked out to about 6-8 yds where I was able to draw and shoot her. I never thought she was going to end up giving me a shot.

The buck I took Monday night looked right at me 6 or 7 times (probably because I was shaking so bad the whole stand was moving). So did the buck he was with but I guess the food was more important to them. Now they' re the food. I will say I had on a face mask, 3-D camo and a good back drop. I know I was shaking and that' s why they looked but I was never enough to alarm them.

I swear I think it' s being bred into their instincts or something. I' ve actually watched deer walking along....looking around up in the trees. It' s almost predictable now. They just look for trouble I guess. I usually get stared at plenty of times during the season...majority of the time they dismiss me and go on about their business(if I don' t screw up;)). It just seems weird to me to see how much they look up now. 20 years ago they never looked up at all it seemed.

back when tree stands first came out and most people either stalked or sat on the ground, the deer sure got surprised by a hunter off the ground. I feel they have sure come acustomed to seeing people in trees and off the ground. I agree with Gryan and WV Hunter 100%. What is the next trick we can do to fool them? Good Luck!! -- CDH

RE: hey buddy what are you doing up in the tree
it depends on where you hunt, but if there are cougars in the area they will look up becasue a cougar will sit in a branch and ambush a small deer, and the mothers will look out for their young, another reason is that they are there every day and then one day your there and they know something is wrong. they just might sense that something is different and would rather not take the chance to see what it is.

Most of the time in your tree stand, you backdrop is the sky. The deer see
a big weird lookin' bulk of somthin in the tree. Usally the deer dont pay it know mind. But dont forget, every hunt is about 75% LUCK any waz! |
RE: hey buddy what are you doing up in the tree

RE: hey buddy what are you doing up in the tree
One time, I was 30 plus feet high in a tree, watching some does steadily walk a trail that goes beneath me. I was completely motionless, against the tree with camo on and everything, and WASN' T even going to shoot. Yet the lead doe looked up at me when it was within 10 yards of my stand. That is odd, since it had to look up steeply at me from that close. She stopped and trotted away, other does in tow, only to come out about 40 yards behind me about 10 or 15 minutes later. That time, I decided not to wait for a buck, but to go ahead and fill my tag, and I popped the lead doe with my open sight muzzleloader in hopes it was the same one who saw me before. Of all my hunting experiences that was the most unbelieveable time I got busted. It was as though she had ESP or something...
