Default Opening Day Success in SC

We had another fun filled and exciting opening weekend at Bonehead Hunt Club once again in South Carolina. The mornings were not as brutally hot as usual and it made for a nice sit. We hit the woods in the mornings and hunted some peanut and pea fields in the afternoons. I sat with my younger son Danny the first night and it was quiet most of the afternoon. Shortly past 8, a decent 7 point came out hugging the tree line at about 85 yds. We watched him for a bit and Danny decided he wanted to take him. He steadied his 308 on him and let it rip. The buck humped over from the shot and darted into the woods. I saw where he ran in and we both heard a crash within seconds. I was pretty sure he got him but Danny started to second guess himself. We waited about 15 minutes and got down. We went straight to where he ran in and immediately found blood. About 20 yds later, there he was piled up. His smile tells the story, his first velvet buck. I sat with my older son Michael the next evening and we saw over a dozen deer, some spikes, a few forkies and a ton of does. It was nice to spend time with both my boys in the stand, even though they have gotten older, they still like to hunt with their old man. Looking forward to another great season.

Congrats to your son. That's the smile of a hunter.

Anyone wanting to hunt velvet bucks should look into a trip to SC, they have probably the earliest season start (Aug 15'ish) in the country. Plenty of time for a trip without missing your own states season. Just a suggestion.
