IMHO they are "different kinds of recoil". A 3" 12 thumps ya good & solid. A 338 (or any of the "super mags" like a 300 Ultra, 30-378Wby, Lazzeroni etc) is more a high pitched "crack" whereby the percussion of the high speed bullet & muzzle blast "adds" to it all. Plus the rifle is accelerated rearward quicker (especially a light rifle vs a heavier shotgun). But I'd say that's all "perceived" as more than likely I'd guess the tables & physics will show the 3" 12 to produce more rearward thrust.

Now if you want THE worst & make you forget about the above, then get an ol 835 Mossberg, synthetic stocks, 24" barrel, ported turkey tube & stoke it full of 3.5" 2.5oz Hevishot Nitros from "Nitro Ray" in MO! I've been shooting these things for over a decade... Didn't say I enjoy them tho! The ONLY other gun in my 3 dozen+ arsenal that approaches it is my Marlin Guidegun 45-70 with Buffalo Bore ammo...

Give a H&R single shot 32 inch full choke 10ga. with any turkey load you have a try and let me know how it stacks up!

I had one, took the 2# piece of steel outta the butt stock, cut the barrel at 25" added peep sights, and had custom choke tubes made, it could kick the lard outta one of grandma's biscuits but wasn't any worse than my 1992 vintage 835 synthetic (non ported barrel and choke)

the custom MOSSBERG slug gun I just built kicks less then a 270.. The barrel is pinned and magna ported and gun is fairly heavy..

I shoot Hornady 300 sst slugs 2" high at 100 and 4" low at 200" it's a bad rig...

Have a newer new england arms 10 ga. Turkey with 24" barrel srew n choke fiber optic front bead. Kicks the devil out of you. Have a howa 1500 synthic 338 win mag. Recoil is manageable, wouldn't let a newbie shoot it but I don't mind it. One of the worst kicking shotguns I have is an ithaca 66 slug shooting 2 3/4" rem sluggers.

Shooting at the range everyone feels recoil - shooting at an animal no one notices it~

Those straight stocks on those ithaca 66 puts a world of hurting on you. I got 20 of them different barrel lengths nd chokes and gauges all kick hard.

When we were kids we would enjoy pulling both triggers on my uncle's double barrel SXS 12 gauge shotgun !

I'm glad he never found out - that would have hurt a lot more than the "kick"!!!

I also enjoyed contact sports.....................?!?!
