Do some of the GPS apps for iPhones work when you are out of range for a phone signal? I have one on my iPhone and it doesn't.

My advice is spend the money on a Garmin and do it right. Especially if you plan to go west.
Ain't no signal in the mountains here.

Not going out west, I already have a GPS. Just looking for a quick app that can be used on my hunting land in Alabama. Sometimes I venture into the thick stuff, would come in handy as I always have my phone on me.

It's an old thread and I don't know if it is followed, but I use Spyglass app for navigation. You can download maps and read them later in the woods without cell signal. It works great for marking waypoints and saving locations. It's not easy to get lost with it, really.

I use ActInNature. Allows you to tag stands, feed and water locations, and more.

I have the OnX maps for scouting and finding new places to hunt. I love it as long as I have cell phone signal, which I do almost everywhere I hunt.
