Age and score please.

A friend sent a picture of two bucks that were taken in Southern tier of New York this past season. I don't know either hunter. Cograts to them both. I have a friend at work who thinks the 8 pointer is the older buck and the 10 point would score 115 max. Please I would like
some well thought out analysis of age and score. Personally I think the
10 is 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 and would score about 130 the 8 point is 2 1/2 max
Thanks

It's impossible to age a deer just by looking at a picture or rack, but a guess would be 2 1/2 and maybe 3 1/2. The bigger one might be 4 1/2, but I would think the rack would be better than that, unless the genetics there or food, or both, aren't very good. I doubt the better of the two will do better than 115", if that! The tines are very short and the right side mass looks very poor to get much of a score over that. My comments are just based on your question and not in the fact that the guys shouldn't have shot them or anything like that!

Two very nice deer, congratulations on the fine harvests! Tough to gauge age without seeing a deer on it's feet or it's teeth. The 10 is nice and heavy and likely go 120, but also might be in mid 120s. The eight is also a nice trophy and has a big old head. I do not think it's an older deer, however as it's not very heavy and doesn't show any "age" junk around the bases. Tine length means a lot in an overall score.

the 11 point here (guys in BG) is a very old deer, guessed at 7.5. Note the garbage around his bases and looks to be on the decline; score is 135

the big 8 is likely 3.5 or 4.5 and has junk on it's bases; score is 141

the big 9 is very heavy with one tine (#10) broken off and scores about 143. I'd guess at least 4.5, maybe 5.5 yrs old

Hope that helps a bit.

115" on the 10 pt? I don't know about that. I bet he pushes 130 or close to it. The tines are shorter maybe but the mass will get him there.

Id bet 130 on the one buck

He has decent mass at the bases and is decent on up on the left side. However, the right side is very weak as far as mass after you get past his brows. He also doesn't have a tine that looks like it would go over 5" at best. If the buck on the left in post #3 actually scored 135" I'm sticking with my guess, as I can't see the OP buck being within 5" of him like the 130" guesses would make him. Pictures are really hard to score, especially when there is only one at one angle. I've seen fights break out on threads like this where the deer has actually been scored and people come on the thread and still argue the score!

Its harder to score a deer based on pictures than it is to get a peice of string a tape mesure and go to the boone and crocket website and follow the instructions.then there is no guess work involved

Anybody on here have some advice on aging deer, especially by the teeth? I think it would be helpful for a lot of members on here. Nice bucks by the way.

Here's a link that has some pretty good pictures showing how deer are aged by tooth wear. What a deer eats and where it lives has a big influence on tooth wear. A deer that is mainly eating crops will not have the wear that a deer in the northern woods that is eating cedar a number of months during the winter to survive will have. A deer that is eating in sandy type soil will also have faster tooth wear that one that has plenty of food and doesn't have to have close contact with the ground.

Just my 2 cents but that 10 pt. looks like it'd be right around that 3 1/2 range, with about:
15 inch main beams
16 inches of mass on each side (MAYBE)
16 inch spread (Again maybe, hard to tell from one picture)
2.5 inch brows
5 inch G2's
4 inch G3's
2inch G4's
= 107 inches <- My guess (Very roughly)

That 8 pt may be 2 1/2 and lucky to break 90 inches.

Just my opinion.

The picture that I attached was one that I managed to get during bow season and it BARELY broke 130.
