i recently responded to an email for whitetail deer hunts in the midwest. the outfitter does hunts in several different states and when he found out i was from ks he indicated he "hated kansas" due to the low number of deer. that really surprised me given what you see on the tv shows. they look like there is a book deer on every property. i have hunted here almost since the first modern day season and have witnessed a rise in numbers but over the past several years have seen a rapid decline. i have my own land to hunt so i am not hunting the minimal public land that exists. i am attributing the decline to the large number of tags available and in particular the huge number of doe tags. i do not buy into the killing does for the good of the herd. we definitely do not have a winter kill and the only reason for the doe harvest is complaints from insurance companies and farmers. its strictly political. if the legislatures would stay out of it we would have a better population of deer and a more huntable population. just my 2 cents worth. when i read about states like iowa having 3 buck tags and limited their out of state tags it irritates me to see our government giving out tags to virtually everyone who applies with no thought as what it is doing to the overalll population.
