I never gut in the field. Opening the gut lets dirt and junk get on the meat, gutting in the field also calls wolves and coyotes and they hang around long enough to mess the area up.

That makes sense. I don't have anything other than fox to worry about. Between them and turkey vultures, everything is gone in 24hrs! I won't drag any deer a 1/2 mile unless it's gutted though.
