Eight pointer
Hey guys I found me a 7 or 8 pointer here where I hunt at two times consecutively and we have trail pics of him I have never spooked him and he has never flagged me with his tail but he just won't come within my max confident range he keeps looking into the box blind that I'm hunting and never turns broadside unless he is leaving the food plot and he is never with any other deer. He always looks like he is very nervous. He is a good sized deer for around here and that is my first 7 or 8 I have ever seen while hunting. Can anyone help me out with what I should do to get him down on the ground?
What are you using gun or bow? Whats the range? Get used to em being spooky! Your lucky he is coming in during daylight hours.
I'm using a gun I can group 1 inch or less at 150 yards with my 243 and I feel confident out to about 165 on a deer
He stays out at about 180 or 175 but he never ever turns broadside to the house

Hey the only thing you can do is wait it out and hope he turns broadside cause honestly another 10 to 15 yards beyond your comfort with a rifle you should be good if you are grouping 1" at 150 yards. Or try moveing up the tree line and sit on the ground, but just don't sit right on top of his trail. Also make sure the wind is good and you don't leave to much human scent around. Goodluck and hope you put him down.
Yeah going this weekend and I'm going to camp out in that stand and he comes out a different way every time I think he is just very cautious and very smart
I agree with cmoutos....if there is a tree line just ground hunt and close up the gap a bit......but there is not a lot of difference in 150 yards and 180 yards. If you can shoot 1" groups at 150 yards I would wait until he was facing me and put the bullet right square in his chest.....he is not going to go anywhere.....just make sure you aim square into his chest and the bullet will reach the vitals for sure.....also make sure you have a good solid rest and if you don't feel comfortable wait until you do. Good Luck.
I don't want to shoot in the chest a risk entering into no mans land ang getting his guts
Well if you are going to hunt the same stand you may want to try and take a grunt call and get him to turn for you but be careful with that cause he may deside to drop back in the woods and circle you to catch a scent if he is that skidish and smart. Just give her hell and just think if you don't get him this year he will be bigger next year if he sticks around. Goodluck.
Yeah he never reacts to a grunt call tried that when he was walking to the woods from the food plot
I use the mad buck roar
Fool the hell out of him and be in a treestand the next time! Whack him while he's staring at your ground blind. :happy0001:
Just shoot him.
Yeah though about it but he comes out in a different spot every time so I don't know if the tree stand in that food plot will give me a shot at him
I plan on just busting him next time! Lol
No mans land is no where near shooting a deer in his chest. No mans land is above the lungs and below the spine on a broadside shot. Imo you may have screwed up if you don't see him again bc not shooting at 180yds when your dialed in that good at 150 is a definite missed oppurtunity for you. Wouldn't have hesitsted for a second to take that shot at all and neither should you. That small difference in yardage is nothing for a rifle at all. Anyways good luck.
If you put your scopes crosshairs directly in the middle of his chest the bullet has to bypass his vitals to hit his guts=dead deer. I have shot several with a 223 with a 55 grain bullet and it drops them everytime, bigger guns make more of a mess so I try to avoid that shot because I no longer use my 223 for deer (not legal in VA). But I can tell you if I have a trophy buck standing in front of me facing me he is going to get a 139 Grain pill from my 7X57 right into the chest!
wait for broadside, but utilize the gun.
Your good to 225-250 NO PROBLEM....unless your not using a scope. I guess thats the issue. BE CONFIDENT. HOLD TRUE. SKQWWEEEEEEEEEEEEZZZZEE ! You'll be surprised . Hold a inch or two high.....won't hurt you. Bet he's down on the ground ! GL |
What a strange post...
I can shoot 1" groups at 150 yards, but won't shoot a deer at 180. C'mon man. Shoot the friggin' thing already. You need to contact the OP or better yet the kid in the "Sons First Deer" post to learn how to pull the trigger. |
Shoot already
Take the shot. Hold 1-2" high and squeeze it off.
Or leave your ground blind where it is and put up a tree stand at a different angle 30 yards closer one night. Get nto your stand an hour earlier than usual. Be still. No mans land? If you can shoot 1" at 150 with a .243, there IS no 'no mans land' at 180 yards. However I can appreciate not taking a shot you're not comfortable with. Something tells me there's another factor involved here. |
I am not going to pull the trigger unless I feel absolutely confident with my shot I don't want to risk shooting him and injuring him but no killing him. That is a guaranteed way to never see him again
No other factors that's all there is and I just don't want to take a risky shot and mess it up because I'm excited. I thought you guys would at least respect that I didn't take a chance in wounding a great deer and risking not seeing him again
Like others said if you can hold 1" groups at 150 then 180 isn't much of a stretch...Look up deer vitals online and it will help you knowing where to aim on a head on shot.
This is something you should know anyway. Some people think they are aiming right and aren't hitting vitals or not heart lung area even when a deer is broadside. A gun with the right amount of energy will drop a deer in its tracks at 180 yards. But you should also be prepared to track him if he runs off. At that distance even head on make sure he is still. The last thing you want is him taking a sidestep and your bullet striking him wrong...If he is head up looking your way standing there I would center the chest and squeeze a round off. I'd guess he'd be laying there when you walk up.... Oh and when that happens....post up some pics! :) |
I will and I know how to do a head on shot I just don't feel real comfortable doing one that far the range isn't the problem it is that I don't like to take chest shots I will take one if he shows up again though. Defenately

I think most people here think the same as me.... totally cool with you not taking the shot...but trying to encourage you to not miss an opportunity to kill a nice buck... Ultimately its your call...I for one hope he walks in broadside at 100 yards or less so you don't have to worry about a front shot. |
I don't take head shots...Through the chest (Lungs/heart) for me. I have been lucky and never needed to shoot one head on...If your ready when he turns you could get a half second broadside ...but you better have the cross hairs on him....
I think you may have misread my post...by "head on", I meant facing you not head shot. |
Yes I knew what you meant by that sir. Thank you
Sir???? who you talking to ...LOL
Good luck buddy let us know how it goes. |

However, I also think you should spend time on the range with your chosen firearm... the .243 you are using. That round is a capable cartridge for a frontal shot at 180 yards but you must be ready. Being ready is key. I think you are not ready because at that range (180 yards), you are untested. This is only supposition on my part. Your Mileage May Vary. |
Yes and I'm pretty handy with that 243 I have killed 6 other deer with it and none have gone anywhere but straight down lol I think I could do it I just don't want to mess it up
He is not really that big of a buck but I like the way his horns look and it's just the fact I have seen him 2 times and both times he knew something was up and didn't offer a broadside shot. I guess I feel like he outsmarted me in a way that's why I want to take him
I'm sorry and don't want to P--- you off but unless he walks backwards he must be broadside at some point? And if you have a solid rest and can group 1" at 150 yds, what the H problem? You should be able to hit him at 350 yds with that gun ? And if you are worried about hitting his guts if hes facing you, what do you think you have to go through to get to the guts ????????? 180yds is nothing for the fine little 243 bullet. Shoot him already.
Take it from a guy who has killed many deer with a frontal chest shot with a .243 shooting 95 grain sst's. They go straight down when hit there. Be confident and take him if you see him. Best of luck to ya!! And you damn well better post pic's and story lol.
