Getting started is pretty easy and not terribly expensive. I spent about $130 on a camera arm from 3rdArm and about $350 on a Sony Handycam CX-160. It's not the most sophisticated setup, but it works.
Then I edit on iMovie on my iMac which is very easy to use. I've tried FinalCut Pro, but the hassle was too much for such small improvements.
