Deer walking INTO or WITH the wind?
A friend and I were haveing this conversation and the debate came up that deer always walk with the wind in their face and they bed with the wind on their back. I told him that I have seen deer walk with the wind on all directions of them as long as they get to where they want to go.
Question?? Do deer MOSTLY/MAINLY walk with the wind on their face or quartering the wind? What have you mainly seen them do?

I think it has something to do with their comfortability. If not spooked, and have not smelled danger I think they will be more inclined to go with the wind.
Walking into the wind strikes me as a cautious move. Wind at the back allows them to smell danger from behind them and watch out front.
Once the rut kicks in, their noses will guide them to the does, and sometimes with reckless abandon!!!

I have seen deer walking in any direction with reference to the wind's direction. I can't attest to noticing any strong preference.
Frankly, I very seldom catch deer bedded, however in most cases the ones that I have seen are bedded , they were laying with the wind to their back.

I stalk into bow range of several bedded deer every year. Usually on the edge of some thick cover or obstacle. Often @ the base of a small ridge. I have noticed them up high on the ridge with wind at the back. This way they can see a good ways and smell/hear any danger behind them. When they lay at the base it often is when the wind is swirling.

ive always seen and heard of them walking into the wind so they can smell whats ahead. but ive also seen deer pay no attention to the wind and go whatever direction they want to. deer are confusing and hard to predict
