4x4 or 8 point?

What' s the deal between us Canadian' s calling up deer by sides and American' s calling up total points? Any one know how that happened? Could it be that damn metric system again:D Just wondering...JDinAB

Y' know, JD. When I first moved to Colorado from New England nearly 20 years ago, A guy that I worked with ( a Colorado native) said " You guys from back East cheat. You call a 4X4 whitetail an eight point!" I replied: " Well if it has 8 points, it has eight points. What' s the purpose of breaking it down by side? It seems like unnecessary talking to me. I mean, a man with 4 fingers on one hand, and five on the other would just say he has nine fingers. He wouldn' t call himself a 5X4, now would he!?" The thing that gets me is that the simple, obvious mathamatical truth is that they add up to the same damn thing! However, some people, for whatever inexplicable reasons, get upset if you don' t use their particular " language" when referring to the arrangement of male ungulate headgear.

In my youth when I used to read every outdoor mag I could get my hands on normally mulies and elk were the 4X4' s and whitetails were 8 pointers, I never thought of it as a Canadian vs American thing.

Beans...lmao! :D

An 8pt is an 8pt is an 8pt...any way you look at it! My good buddy that moved to montana...he now calls them 4x4' s....after 28 years of living in the east and calling them 8pt' s. LOL...to each his own, huh? [:-]

I always wondered what they call a deer with only one spike. 0x1??? ;)

I have always heard elk and mule deer refered to by 4X4, 6X6,..etc, and whitetails refered to by their total number of points. The assumption I was making is that it depended on the type of animal, but, from the posts I read here, it sounds like it may be a geographic thing.

I don' t think they count the mulie' s brow tines either.

Don' t count the brow tines? You gotta be crazy, that is a point!!

My only question is.......if you have a 4 x 6, which side has 4 and which side has six? It would be kind of silly to break it down if it didn' t do anything at all.

It' s eastern count vs. western count, not a US & Canada thing. Calling a 10-point a 5X5 doesn' t bother me though--I can add. :D

You can add. Then a 5x5=25 and a 5+5=10.:D
