At first thought, I thought it might be a good idea, but it would never be accepted by the taxpayers or the anti' s. Zero chance of it becoming a reality in public schools.

:DIn NC they' ve been teaching hunter safety in the High Schools For 30 + years.
It is usually taught in FFA or agriculture class. Nc wildlife commision sponsors.
Commission also teaches several public hunter safety courses throughout the year.;)

I am from a small town in central Missouri and we had hunter education in P.E. in junior high and still do, almost everyone has the course by the end of high school, we even had a chapter on shooting air rifles during it and also had an archery chapter in PE also. Our school also has a Wildlife and Pond Management class and Forest Management class available to all students in the vocational agriculture department. I took all of these and learned a lot, its nice to have things like this offered in school. 11 years ago and still going , hope it dont stop

Hey,

Great question, well, I feel for what it is worth, that hunters education would help cut down on firearm accidents, I know that tax payers would have a hard time with a class like hunters safety, but if the numbers show that teaching our youth how to treat firearms, as if they are always loaded, it would help parents to keep their guns locked up and put away with locks. Here in Colorado, so many accidents are from kids who don' t know how to handle firearms. Maybe we can as a group of hunters talk to our educators, and see if there is some interest in getting this into our classroom...I agree with you, we need it.

Not a bid idea. I have spen 15 years in the Army and my 14 year old can handle a gun better than most of the guys that join the army. Four months in Iraq and I was just as afraid of the guys around me with loaded weapons as I was the Iraqis:D:D

It would be tough convincing folks in the Bronx that Hunter Education should be a required subject. How about East LA? What right should we have to require it in any school system? This is not mandated as a required subject. As much as I am for hunter safety programs, I would be against it being put into our school systems on a national basis. If those schools in rural America voted to install it and make it part of the shool learning process, then that would be the exception to the rule.

Making it available as an option would be in the best interest of everyone...

RE: We need hunter safety in the schools

I live in NC and took a hunter safety course in high school when I was 14 years old through the agricutural class I was in. At that time it was not mandatory to have taken the course before you bought a hunting license. I didn' t start deer hunting until 1993 after they had passed the HSC law. To my suprise, I wrote a letter requesting a copy of my hunters safety course certificate and a week later I recieved a copy in the mail. It had been 9 years since I had taken the course.

The law was passed I think in 1990 that required anyone who had never had a hunting license go through the hunters safety course before you could get the hunting license. I can' t say that it has decreased the number of hunting accidents but I' m sure it hasn' t hurt either. IN MY OPINION hunting accidents (hunters being shot by other hunters) are caused by stupid, careless people and all the courses in the world can' t help them.

I disagree with that class being taught in schools even as a hunter and army vet myself. Id much rather my child be proficent in math, science, and reading then in hunter safety. I can teach him that. just my opinion

RE: We need hunter safety in the schools

I believe that Hunter Safety courses, as a general rule, have helped to decrease the number of hunting accidents nearly every where they are required. My 7th grade teacher took it upon himself to provide a basic course each year and this well before it was required in Wisconsin where I grew up.
I would suggest however that the schools today are hardly the place for it to be taught. Our so called educators, can' t seem to get it together enough to provide a basic education in their chosen fields of expertise let alone something this important. Leave Hunter Education in the hands of NRA/State certified instructors that have a vested interest in the sport.

Our high school offers a class that includes hunter safety and the trapping thing too. Can' t remember to much about the trapping end. But the class went over many different aspects of the wild life in our area. We even got out of school for a day of fishing at a local farm pond. We then cleaned the fish in the ag shop the next day in class. He even showed us how to clean a pheasant in the middle of the class room. Towards the end of the semester, we had a wild game cook. Had rabbit, pheasant, buffalo, deer, goose, duck, dove and the fish we caught. As of last year the class was still offered. Our local NWTF chapter donated $500 to purchase some kind of gun training aid. Not exactlly sure how it works, but the teacher was more than appreciative.

I grew up in Missouri and still hunt there every fall. They gave us a Hunter Safety (It was called Hunter Education then) course in grade school (4th or 5th grade). Missouri also has a law that if you were born after 1968, you have to provide your Heritage Card (Hunter Safety card) before you can purchase a license/tag.

I would love to see it happen but with all the anti’s and liberals having enough power to have “In God We Trust” and MORE taken out of the public school system, I see it unlikely. I refuse to believe that there are stronger numbers with the anti’s and liberals but you know what they say is true……”The wheel with the loudest squeak gets the oil.” I think it’s about time we quit feeling comfortable with others fighting our fights and we get off our ass and start doing some things for ourselves! God bless the N.R.A. but I think things must be done on a grass roots level too. CDH [:@]

I think it would be great! I see alot of you already have shot the idea down saying the tax payers and the anti' s won' t let it happen. Did you ever stop to think that the reason the anti' s get so much of their agenda through is because we Hunters and Shooters always have a defeatist attitude and don' t ever try to push the issue. We just stand back and let the anti' s make all the noise. Think about it!

I know that here in Va when I was in jr. high we were taught hunters education during PE class.. we also had a achery chapter as well... then once in high scholl we had archery every year in PE..(too bad they wouldnt let me bring my own lol)

I think that it should be offered in every jr. high Make parts of it such as gun saftey and maybe wildlife managment mandatory but they other sections covered could be elective in the case of someone who did not wish their child to hunt (not that I can imagine one person who doesnt like to hunt or want their kids to either... maybe its just the crowd I hang out with lol). But atleast teach all youngsters about firearms and saftey and about wildlife managment..maybe the managment part would help those people who are undecided about how they feel on hunting see why its needed and shoudl be valued..

Aw, come on.

Do we really need the government teaching our kids one more thing that we should be teaching them ourselves?

RE: We need hunter safety in the schools

I think it' s a great idea, and I' m very happy to hear it is still available in some areas! Unfortunately, I haven' t heard of any classes in the schools in Oregon for a long time. When I was in the 8th grade, I took a class called " Outdoor Education" . It was great! There was me and 21 guys...not many girls were interested back then. We learned everything imaginable about hunting, fishing, and survival. Everyday we target-practiced with pellet guns right in the classroom (that' s when I learned I was shooting with the wrong eye and learned to shoot left-handed), and we made fishing lures and built our own rods. It was the best, and most fun, class I ever took!:)

Do we really need the government teaching our kids one more thing that we should be teaching them ourselves?
Any way that we can get more kids interested in hunting and fishing, is a good thing! Alot of parents don' t hunt and so the kids that would like to try it need somebody to show them how to be successful and safe. I don' t think there' s a down-side to classes that teach that!:)
