I tend to change my gear for the occasion/season throughout the year depending on current weather conditions. For some of the year when I have plenty of pockets, I use a Butt pack. Some of the year I use a Fly-fishing vest, and some of the year I use a sure enough Back pack.

But there are a few things that are ALWAYS in whatever I' m carrying.

- A way to make water, as often as not they are iodine tablets, but more and more I am using a " pump" type purifier.

- a fifty five gallon heavy duty trash bag rolled up tight. It can be used to make a great shelter. Just cover it well for insulation.

- a spool of cotton twine. It can be used for anything.

-A GPS,Topo map, Plastic grid protractor, compass, and a few extra batteries.

- a few chem lights. Not the cheap wanna-be' s you get at wall-mart, but sure enough chem-lights.

- a whistle.

- several ways to light a fire. a butane lighter or two, plus a magnesium friction starter. They are wrapped in a zip-lock with a couple of rubber bands.

- a pair of socks wrapped in a zip-lock.

- extra ammo for whatever weapon I' m carrying. No less than ten rounds, but often around twenty.(I also have extra ammo where it is easyer to get to. So I often have about thirty rounds with me at any given time.

-a hand full of electrical tie straps. They are good for anything from building a blind to strapping feet together. They are also good for " sewing" the gut back together of a gutted animal to help keep junk out while dragging.

- a couple of extra " hot-pockets" . They come in handy ALL year around here.

- a little salt. If I' m gonna spend the night out because It' s too late to get back home, I' m gonna put a little flavor on whatever I end up eating.

That about sums up what I " always" have. There are times when I carry considerably more, but those times are during the " rest" of the year when the weather is not so harsh and I don' t really mind spending a night out. The winter here is just to cold to do it unless you really have to.

Whilst, it' s good to carry everything you might need for your hunting trip, I suppose it all depends on the intended nature of your stalk.

If it' s like a very long trip and there is the possibility of a dangerous fall, etc, you need appropriate gear. In summer in Australia, we can hunt, but there are a few snakes getting around, so it' s good to carry the old bandages etc.

In short, however, I like to carry, GPS, spare ammo, 3" folder, flouro tape for marking, compass, food & water, 2 way radio, digital camera, cover cloth for flies, thermal blanket for emergencies (These fold into nothing.) Bino' s, tape for end of barrel.
Normally, bino' s are carried, GPS is carried in a pocket with a compass.

I think it is fair to say that there is no such thing as a " Complete" list, just some items you might think are handy for you.

What a fantastic idea re: baby wipes. We always keep a roll of paper towels in the trucks, but we have to wait until we' re there to use them and by that point the blood' s all dry. Consider my list changed.

If I am hunting on our 500 acres, I usally go pretty light. Getting lost is not a threat.

I was right in middle of the 500 last year when the fuel pump went out on my Bronco. After the hike to the Hwy. and about 2 1/2 miles of walking to a phone to call my wife, it hit me that finally I had found a good enough reason to have a cell phone.

Another great addition to what I carry with me on a hunt is latex gloves. They are great for field dressing. You can buy a whole box of them at the drug store.

In all my years of hunting, probably the most important thing I have learned is that if you go out in the woods without toilet paper, you increase you odds of needing it by at least 30%.
