First buck! Finally!
Met up with a buddy Monday (12/26) and headed out to his land for my first hunt of this season. It was relatively warm out (57 degrees) and with high winds (at my back), I wasn't very optimistic that I would see any deer. I was more and less just sitting out there thinking ahead to the next day's hunt.
Getting bored...... ![]() Taking a nap..... ![]() I wake up, look around and thought I heard a bleat. I look down the road and sure enough, here comes this doe, announcing her arrival. What an idiot! Soon after, several other deer emerge from the thicket. (In typical "field of dreams" fashion). I watch them feed through the road and into the next thicket. Can you find the deer? I almost couldn't, and I was trying to follow them... ![]() Thought about popping 'ol girl, but decided I would wait and see if anything better came out..... ![]() Glad I did. I was beginning to give up and turned around to check out the field behind me and I thought I saw some brown on the edge. I kept watching and slowly but surely I saw a deer. For the heck of it, I brought my gun up so I could look through my scope. I can't describe the feeling of seeing antlers through my scope. This was the first buck I had ever even seen in the wild. I was a mix of anxious, nervous, and excited! I was shaking and still trying to believe what I was seeing in front of me. Once I gain some composure and steady my rifle, I dropped him, right in his tracks. ![]() Took a while to text my buddy (with the spotty coverage) and tell him to bring the truck. Finally got it loaded up and off to become tasty grilled backstrap. ![]() Decided on a shoulder mount, so I'm anxiously awaiting it's arrival!!!! |
That's a good looking buck and a great story too! Thanks for sharing!

As far as weight goes, we weigh our deer field dressed. It appears to be a 120 lb or so deer if you had it field dressed. |
Congrats on your first buck!

Nice buck in anyones book.
Right place, right time ! Now you know you set the bar pretty high for next year......................... |
Another view of the buck on the ground. I say he had to weight close to 180.....

180 gross weight is possible. We weigh our bigger deer field dressed back at camp. We have a pulley setup with a scale that we tie onto the buck pole.
My camp tags, guts, and then drags the deer out. We let the predators and scavengers have the guts. That, and we have less weight to drag them out with that way. It's better to work smarter, not harder, after all. |
Congrats on a really nice deer. I wish I got the same feeling today I got when I shot my first buck . I'm happy but its just not the same. Good luck hope there is alot more to come for you.
