That's not a easy question to answer because that answer varies by region and local food sources. Around here they tear up corn and apples but won't touch sugar beats or carrots. Next county
Over they will destroy a pile of Sugar beats over night. I preffer food plots over bait. Clover early and I plant alfalfa, chicory, and brassica for mid to late. But sometime bait piles are needed just to compete with other people with bait piles. If you do bait I would suggest hunting travel routs to and from the bait rather than directly over it. I have seen people get busted by a big old doe on the bait and never see anything larger than a 4pt afterwards. On the bait those big old does are on high alert.

We use corn here in places where we can't plant a food plot. I have property right here near my home where the deer refuse to touch the sweet potatoes but another place about twenty minutes I couldn't keep the sweet potatoes there. It has a lot to do with the area and the food that is there. IMO...food plots are the way to go when possible.
