Yes, you can kill deer with a 223 Rem. ... and a 222 Rem. ... and a 22 Swift .... and a 22 Mag. ... and a 22 LR ... but why chose such a marginal round when a 243 Win. , 260 Rem., 6mm Rem., or 6.5x55 SE (which are all relatively light recoil rounds) will do a much better job. And as mentioned, 22 cal. not legal.

Yeah, it will kill deer. You'd be amazed how those little bullets will destroy the insides of a deer.
I'll be hunting with my AR tomorrow and using Hornady 60 grain TAP. Next week I'll be testing out the new Hornady superformance 55 grain GMX bullet at the range to see how well they shoot.

Use a good bullet and the 223 is a fine deer round. I imagine you will be shooting factory ammunition...federal loads a 55gr Barnes TSX that'll whack & stack. They are around $30/box, but a guy can always plink around with the cheap stuff and save the pricey stuff for a quick sight-in and hunt. Even though much cheaper soft points will work, I would go ahead and get a box of the good stuff to give yourself an edge.
If you fancy the swat rifle after toying with it, though, go for it.
