RE: best caliber rifle for white tails???
There are many fine deer calibers out there but of the 2 you mentioned Greg, I would go with the .270. Either the .270 Winchester or the new .270 short mag would be an excellent choice for a deer rifle. I personally use a Browning A-Bolt in .270 Win. and it performs flawlessly with 150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips. I have dropped whitetail bucks from 20 yds out to 300 yds. with it and don' t personally see the need for more gun. But if you anticipate longer shots than that then you might want to look at the .270 short mag.......either way you won' t go wrong.

25-06 shooting handloaded 120 gr nosler partitions. This has been a great rifle for me for open country whitetails. Up close, stretched out..doesn' t matter. Plenty of punch, flat trajectory, mild recoil....Perfect.

*sigh* I guess I' ll be serious...
If you' re only hunting deer and smaller, you can' t go wrong with the .270. It shoots as well or better than any other caliber on the market, it doesn' t kick you too hard, and it' s the third-easiest gun to find ammo for (.22 and .30-06). If you think you might hunt something bigger, I' d opt for the .30-06. Again, doesn' t kick too hard, shoots well, amazingly easy to work with.
If I had to buy one gun to shoot deer for the rest of my life, I' d buy my brother' s Remington Model 7 7mm-08. That gun is awesome.

versatility.... I think that the 30-06 is the way to go...Reason::::you can use a ligh bullet such as 150 gr. for the deer and the go up to 180 for the larger animals.... Myself I stay with the 150 gr. for all my hunting needs...It seems to work great on deer as well as moose... Happy Hunting....Good Luck....[][:-][:-][8D]

Any caliber that you can ACCURATELY shoot from .24 on up, with good, hunting bullets of 100 gr. or more will be good for deer. The caliber should shoot flat enough for the ranges that you will be shooting too. That said, you can' t find any better deer medicine than a 7MM-08!

I have 3 rifles. I started with a 35 Rem. that I used soley for 10 years. Then lucked up on a bolt action 30-30. Had always wanted a .35 Whelen and when Remington brought the Classic out, legalizing the caliber, I got it.
Being a reloader, the Whelen can be loaded down to 35 Rem or to a point that with 180 gr. spitzers, it shoots at point of aim to 220 yds. (1 inch high at 50 yds.)
As the 30-30 is a light gun, I like to use it the timber stalking. Since it is clip fed, I load it with sptizers some. But I still get out the 35 Remington some.
