RE: want to start
Lots of good folks on here that will be happy to try and help you with specific questions. I' m assuming you are wanting to deer hunt, so do you have a rifle? What distance would most of your shots be, open fields etc? Are there any agriculture fields on the property? What are the food sources? Welcome to the board.

RE: want to start
gun (that you can shoot and hit your target with)
liscense knife rope clothing....thats all i use really....if your going to be walking a good pair of boots will be nice to have...if its really cold and alot of snow pac boots are nice...i dont know about your weather so i dont know....dress in layers so when you get hot you can shed some clothing...i dont use a tree stand or scents or scent eliminating stuff or anything..play the wind and you can get away with the bare minimal like i do.....i walk 2 miles to my spot so taking alot of equiptment and treestands ect is really tough....if i cant wear it it doesnt come...fill my pockets with what i can and between me and my dad we carry one small military back that you sling over a shoulder with our food and water...and a good seat is nice if your going to hunt snow or frozen ground...hunting can be very cheap and easy to get into.....or you can go all out and buy unneeded gear and spend 1000s...it doesnt matter....you need to scout and have a good spot to see and take deer...you can spend 1000s on gear and never see a deer....good luck....also welcome to the board.....stick around you can learn alot.....dont be afraid to post questions.....we were all new once and everyone knows what it is like to know nothing....no question is too stupid......post away! |
RE: want to start
I think most of these guys/gals on here will help you with everything you need to know. I have learned a TON of information on here. I have spent many hours reading post and asking questions and they have been very beneficial. I do agree with Mauser about hunting being cheep or expensive but i always like to go for the expensive not just because of quality but because once you get hooked it is fun to buy and use all of this uneccesary trinkets. Have fun.. and good luck.

RE: want to start
The bare-bones essentials:
Something to kill the animal with Somewhere to kill the animal Legal ability to kill the animal In other words, get a gun, learn how to use it extremely well, then find a place you can legally hunt. That means hunter safety courses for most people, then buying a license. Make sure you get the additional stamps and other things if you' re hunting WMAs, or for ducks, or with a muzzleloader... Beyond that: -Scout the area you' re hunting -Set up a stand (get treestand/blind) -Get to the stand in the dark (flashlight, fluorescent tape, good boots) -Get into your stand (safety harness) -Stay there, very still, silent, and invisible, for a long time (camouflage, handwarmers, seat cushion, snack) -See the animal (binoculars, rifle scope) -Shoot the animal (rifle, ammunition) -Find the animal (flashlight, property visitation rights for surrounding territory) -Take the animal with you (rope, dragging sled, or cart) -Tag the animal -Transport the animal (pickup, or some way to keep your back seat clean) -Clean the animal (winch, knives, bucket for entrails, saw for head removal/bone separation, good cleaning book) -Make the animal into meat (knives, running water, good butchering book) -Preserve meat (plastic wrap, freezer paper, and a good deep-freeze) -EAT (good wild game recipe book, ingredients, hungry belly) -REPEAT |
RE: want to start
FL/GA summed it up perfectly!
Welcome to the world of hunting, and to the board. I' m pretty new here myself, but can happily say that folks here have been REALLY helpful and I think this is one of the best boards out there. Lots of knowledgable and ethical folks. Take it one step at a time and don' t be shy about asking questions. Oh, and add one more step to FL/GA' s list - " Invite your newfound hunting bulletin board friends for some quail/deer hunting on an undisturbed Mississippi farm" :) Seriously, though - be sure to keep everyone updated on your progress! |
RE: want to start
Don' t let a checklist of needed items discourage you from hunting. Most are one time purchases and packing stuff will soon become second nature. When you start seeing deer and have shot opportunities, you' ll be hooked! There' s nothing like being in a treestand in a good location before the sun comes up, waiting and listening for deer!
