Either will kill a deer, but I prefer bolt actions.

I had a pump 30-06 once....took a shot at a jack rabbit, missed...pumped it... Pulled the trigger, nothin happened...cant rack it..it felt bound...stay real safe with it as the safety wont go back on..get back to the trailer, can see a jammed shell in there...pointed it straight down on a white fold out plastic table, im standing over it if you will... Stuck a screw driver down in there to un-jam the shell that is in there in a very awkward way....as soon as it moves...boooooom....plastic table has ballooned open and there is a hole the size of a welders rod in the floor....
Just sayin, easier to watch the feed on a bolt!

I know a few guys that can work wonders with a pump. I watched a guy one day kill 3 deer before they could cross a road and they were crossing at the same time. 3 shots sounded nearly like 1. I was just a kid and they were running dogs. In the right hands a pump is as good or better than an automatic.

Which ever one you like to hunt with the best. Bolts are known for their accuracy but if you like to hunt with a pump then that is what I would hunt with.
