HUNTER shot in chest

Anyone here or know the guy that was shot in the chest in iowa and lived. Someone was looking over him that day..LUCKY MAN

rlpsystems 01-11-2011 02:30 PM

Shot in the chest with what? Thats a tough area to be hit in with a large caliber bullet.

Thanks Ron. Man, not a slug. Maybe 00 9 pellet? I hate to hear these types of stories. BLAZE ORANGE is sooooo bright.........Is it the fact that 00 buck shot allows more room for error? I have hunted shot gun and rifle for deer. Heck my huntin buddy hunts shot gun and thats it. He'll fire away at a running deer boom boom boob.... I use the one well placed shot, one kill idea. Always looking through a scope and seeing grey, brown hairs and where I want to hit the animal. If I'm staring at a bead and an area of deer .......sure is easy to see BLAZE ORANGE...........

Well said ripsystems! I grow up hunting deer in Iowa, I never used 00 always a slug and if I could not do it in one shot there would be no shoot.
I have hunted with some large pheasent hunting parties and those sweeping shotgun shots have caused the same problem only not as serious.

I do hope this hunter is doing ok. My prayers go out to him.

Thats crazy

Sounds like it may be just another made up story t protect the shooter ?
Anyone no for sure if the shooter actual hit a deer or was shooting at one ?
So was it doe season or buck only ?? Big difference but shouldnt be .
Hope the guy who got shot is o.k. .

I,ve had shots at some very nice bucks but didnt . (hunters 200 yards away but in line with the deer on the drive )
Thats part of hunting ,

NO WHATS BEHIND AND BEYOND YOUR TARGET ...
Some hunters just get to caught up in the (deer) moment .

"Sure is easy to see blaze orange"

I never had anything bad happen to me or anyone else, but had one close call with some kids swinging rifles on me when a doe ran across the trail between us. They didn't fire because they saw lots of orange, but I had thrown myself in the ditch along the trail when I saw the deer coming. I almost never hunt deer without full orange. That includes hat, coat or jacket with full sleeves, and pants. Most hunters on the mountain are using large backpacks. How much orange does that covor? It is orange camo material, but still is a lot of orange. I see a lot of guys with the legal minimum of a skimpy $1.99 vest and stupid orange baseball hat. An adjustable baseball hat when seen from the back has only about a 2" strip of orange showing. When looking at someone from the side in brush on a hillside or laurel, everything from the waist up is hidden. The cheap vests show no orange from the side-view at all. To top it off, most of these guys wear brown or grey camo pants, the exact color of a deer. I would never take a shot at something brown or grey moving in the brush, but if you can't see orange at all and shoot at a deer....

ive been shot twich while wing shooting, and countlesly peppered. hunting with buckshot is dangerous, and shoundent be leagal for deer.it isint where i hunt in kentucky

CoonHunter3r 01-12-2011 03:36 PM

Well i just posted this to see what people would say. I am actually the guy that got shot lol. It was the worst day of my life and my buddy austin's " he's the one that shot me". there was 8 of us that morning and it was our first push of the day, we were was on a river bottom in boone county iowa. the push was over and right at the last second a doe busted out of the willows in between me and austin he shot once at it when it came out of the willows which is right next to the river, as the deer ran between us it would have to go up a hill so as it passed between us i raised my gun to shoot it austin shot 2 more times and i was hit with the 3rd shot. the slug that had hit me was a richochet off a tree and it hit me just to the right of my right nipple and exited out my back. I was airlifted to mercy hospital in desmoines where they found the slug inside my coveralls. the slug actually had a 1in fiber from my oarnge vest hooked to it. The slug didn't hit anything vital thankfully, i don't know how it didn't someone was looking over me that morning.

Another reason I don't like participating in drives. Did it once and one of the spotters shot their muzzleloader really close to me because they didnt' wait for the deer to clear them .....

Glad he is going to be ok

ronmc1954 01-12-2011 04:12 PM

REALLY glad to hear your doing alright, pretty tricky with starting the post yourself LOL
I wonder the next time you hunt if it will be with a blaze orange BULLET proof vest!!!

Best wishes
Ron

God bless you man. I don't do those kinds of drives. The only drives I do are solo stalking or me and my buddy, silently moving forward, stopping then the other moving forward. We stay about 50-100 yds apart laterally and move forward 40-60 yds at a time depending on the areas we are hunting. We never lose sight of each other and if a deer runs between us, it gets away.
I sometimes hunt with shotgun and buck shot but I always try to be as far away from other hunters as possible and usually in a tree stand shooting downward.

timbercruiser 01-13-2011 05:17 AM

Dang Coonhunter, somebody was looking out for you. Sounds like one of those hits that an inch either way would have been deadly. Was it a 12 guage shotgun slug that hit you?

CoonHunter3r 01-13-2011 08:34 PM

It was actually a 20ga shooting rifled slugs through a smooth bore barrel. I don't know how it didn't hit anything major someone sure likes me up there. The scary thing is the push was all but done and my bestfriend was the closest pusher to the timber we were standing on the edge of and he was standing 20 ft behind me and if it wasn't me that the richochet hit it could have been him. As soon as i was hit i dropped my gun and took off running for the truck which was luckily only about 200 to 250yds away bad thing was i had to go up a hill first, but my adrenaline was pumping and i just knew i had to get the hell out of that river bottom. My one buddy chased me down and met me at the truck and drove me to a nearby town where we waited for the ambulance once they got there they couldn't find and exit wound and said my right lung sounded deminished so i was freaked out and going into shock. I was for sure i was gonna die but i knew i had to be strong cause i had a new baby boy at home "and yes his name is Hunter". So once i got to the hospital in DesMoines and they said i would be fine i knew it wasn't as bad as they had thought and i had thought also.. So yes next year i just might have an oarnge bullet proof vest lmao. The gun is actually the gun i bought for my GF for a christmas gift, and my buddy just borrowed it for that season lol..

halfbakedi420 01-13-2011 08:55 PM

the irony, gettin shot by your own gun...glad your ok, definitely made the perception of the story change.
i think that would be my last drive. i only hunt with my closest buddies, and my kids...makin sure there is a controlled environment. hope yall set some new rules!!

BillBrasky 01-14-2011 08:31 AM

Good thing to hear you're okay CoonHunter, it sounds like the tree absorbed most of the energy of that slug. Otherwise the shock would have really done (more of) a number on your chest. I also feel for your friend Austin, though. If I were him, and even if you do forgive him, this whole ordeal is going to be a hard one to live with.

timbercruiser 01-15-2011 06:00 AM

Coonhunter, there is part of your story that doesn't add up. In your post you say "I was hit with the third shot. The slug that hit me was a ricochet off a tree. and it hit me just to the right of my nipple and exited out my back. I was air lifted to Mercy hospital in Des Moines where they found the slug inside my coveralls.
Then in your last post you say "ambulance, once they got there they couldn't find an exit wound".
I would have thought the first thing the EMT's would have done is cut the coveralls off to find the route of the slug internally and they would have been able to find the exit wound easily.

are you calling bs?

timbercruiser 01-15-2011 09:43 AM

No, not necessarily, just curious.

dpj1030 01-15-2011 02:17 PM

I was thinking the same thing. l0l. hmmmmmmmmm

CoonHunter3r 01-15-2011 02:35 PM

No bs here. My one buddy drove me to the nearby town where we met the ambulance from boone county hospital they got me in the ambulance and cut my clothes off from my waist up.. They sat me up and looked and felt all over my back for an exit wound but could never find one. thats when i started to go into shock they told me it was still inside my chest and my lung sounded deminished. Thats when it started to get hard to breath and was getting real weak. then i heard the helicopter getting close and i was relieved. They got me in the helicopter and when we got to mercy they finished cutting my clothes off and rolled me over thats when they found the exit wound and the slug had made it's way down my coveralls past my waistline. The slug even had a piece off my blaze oarnge vest hooked to it..
