RE: Do all deer herd?
Winter herding does not happen here in Miss. to my knowledge. Snows are usually 1-2 inches with a big one (6+) maybe every 10 or so years. Scant food is available even in winter and the deer have to move around to find it. When I lived in Illinois, (Ogle Co.) I have seen herding during long snow periods of over 100 deer in a group. But that's not difficult for ILL. with their large deer population.

RE: Do all deer herd?
Been so hot this year if they herded up they would be sweating like a lady of ill repute in church around here.

RE: Do all deer herd?
Timbercruiser, I've noticed that also. It's unseasonably warm right now (36-37F)and the deer aren't herding. They're just wandering around, doe's with their fawns, lone does, lone bucks etc...No HERDING?!Too warm.

RE: Do all deer herd?
Last year my husband and i were out taking down our stands on public hunting ground and as we were driving out there was a farmers picked corn stuble field that borders the public hunting ground and we stopped because we saw deer, the deer were in the back of the field and it was to far to make out the sexes but we did count 48 deer in the field. It was the first time either of us had seen deer yarding in such numbers right next to public hunting grounds and we couldnt believe what we were seeing. So now when people say there are no deer left on the public grounds out there, well we know better. So far this year we have not seen any large #s of deer yarding only small groups of 4 to 7 in our area.
