How many bullets?

Random question of the day. When deer hunting, how many bullets do you bring with you? When shotgun hunting I bring 5 in the gun and an extra box of five. Sometimes I feel like the extra box is overkill because usually everything is over in one shot. What about everyone else?

garett12 11-08-2010 12:39 PM

a box for my rifle stays in my pack and my gun holds 7.

scarredup300 11-08-2010 12:41 PM

4 in my gun 4 in my pocket

7.62NATO 11-08-2010 12:43 PM

Muzzleloading - just two extra loads in addition to what's already in my gun. Anything else, just capacity (rifle 5, shotgun 5, slug gun, 3). Unless it's a population control hunt. Then I bring extra, even though there really isn't a need. :D

mohunter09 11-08-2010 12:46 PM

I bring 4 in my rifle, and however many shells are left in the box in my bag JUST INCASE. Plus, If I dont get any deer its nice to get rid of a couple coyotes haha

Backwoods7 11-08-2010 12:54 PM

4 in my rifle 3 in my poket plus my 6gun on my side with a speed loader. When muzzle loading I keep 1 in the gun with 3 extras.

okieshooter 11-08-2010 01:13 PM

If I can't kill it it won't be from lack of shooting!! That is my nephews out look, he carries 3 clips of 5 and probably extras for his semi-auto. My son and I carry encores so we have to make each shot count but still carry 5-8 shells if we have that many. My son has been instructed that if he shoots a big one and can still see it shoot again.

Dan480Man 11-08-2010 04:06 PM

I admit, when I first started, I carried a ridiculous amount of ammo.

Now, I'll carry the 4-5 in the rifle. Usually throw 2 more in my pack, incase I do something stupid, like hit the floorplate release when I'm in my stand.
(Don't laugh, it happens).

If I'm using a revolver in the stand, I'll have the 6 in the cylinder. Maybe a couple extra in my pocket.

T/C Contender loaded, with 5 shells in a holder.

Blackpowder 2 speed loaders is all I have, so thats what I take after its loaded.

I usually consider the possibility of taking 2 deer, and maybe a second shot
per deer in case I suddenly suck at shooting, which could definatley happen.

Now if I'm walking a powerline, trying to jump a deer with a shotgun, I might carry 15 or
so extra shells.

sconnyhunter 11-08-2010 04:27 PM

3 in the gun and around 8 in a belt carrier.

You can hunt with the plug out?

D Rock 11-08-2010 05:10 PM

In Indiana you are allowed to have a fully loaded shotgun for deer season. You have to have a plug for bird hunting though. Interesting responses so far.

Maddog10 11-08-2010 05:36 PM

Four in my rifle, and then I throw the rest of the box in my bag, just in case I ever need any more.

Father Forkhorn 11-08-2010 05:56 PM

Four in the gun and the rest of the box in a little fanny pack.

blackhawk_archery 11-08-2010 06:00 PM

have hunted with 1 slug before, but most times have a box of 5 or 2 boxes.

timbercruiser 11-08-2010 06:13 PM

3 cartridges in my .270

Michlw39 11-08-2010 06:31 PM

Usually enough to reload the gun I'm carrying, which means 3 in the gun another 3 in my pocket for my bolt action 7mm08 and 5 and 5 for my marlin 336.

Ironically, I use the 336 in thick cover where I probably couldn't get more than 2 shots off max...and the 7mm08 in more open country where there is possibility of more shots.

So go figure. Lol.

Buck Holliday 11-09-2010 05:32 AM

I hunt on a mountain so keeping myself light weight is key. I put three bullets in my 30-30. I am very meticulous and patient, waiting for a shot I know is going to knock'em down, usually on the first shot. The two other bullets are for just in case I miss.

I keep one or two extra in my pocket for mercy killings if things don't go well, but I haven't ever had to take those extras out, God bless.

max_yoda 11-09-2010 05:35 AM

just what the gun holds

ADVWannabee 11-09-2010 05:48 AM

I carry 4 in the clip, one in the pipe plus a few more in the pocket. If I am using blackpowder, I carry 3 speedloads.

I must say, in my years of deer hunting, I only needed to reload the BP gun once and have never needed a second shot with the rifle. So I guess I carry way more than I need.

13pointjomc 11-09-2010 07:22 AM

1 Attachment(s)
Attachment 13797My deer rifle has one of them things on the stock that holds 9. So i got 4 cartridges in my gun and 5 on the stock shell holder thing lol. Thats my 30-06 by the way.

Allen Denton 11-09-2010 07:52 AM

we also can take the plug out for deer in Virginia and I have 4 3 1/2 inch in the gun and 6 in my pocket, what is left from the 2 boxes. I also have my sons extras for his 20 gauge in my other pocket. He can hold 5 in his and then I hold the other five.

SchuLace 11-09-2010 08:17 AM

I usually carry 4 in my gun and a box in my bag. Can never have too many shells. Plus there is always a coyote running around somewhere.

stabnslab_WI 11-09-2010 08:32 AM

After that big shoot out in Rice lake WI, I bring a lot!! Safty in numbers!!

Tasumin 11-09-2010 08:36 AM

I keep my gun full, 6 in the 30-06 and a box in the bag. (never know whats gonna happen)

Muzzle loader i have my 3 speedloaders 10 sabbots and enough powder to shoot them.

although i only need one shot nearly 97% of the time.

accman 11-09-2010 08:37 AM

5 in the gun and 10 in a belt clip. May be overkill, but I always thought of it for safety reasons. If I was ever hurt, or unable to walk, no outside communication, at least I could let off a shot every so often if they came looking for me. God, you'd think I was hunting in the wilderness or something. In our club, we hunt close enough that if I pass gas, somebody'd hear it. Just kidding, but I'd rather have em and not need em, than to need them and not have em.

Chuck7 11-09-2010 04:41 PM

I just load the rifle or shotgun..I hunt in a high pressuized WMA..you are blessed if you see one deer. you will get one shot only..

edgecam 11-09-2010 04:49 PM

5 in my rifle and 15 in the 9mm on my hip. If I am going up in the mountain I will take an extra 5 for the rifle.

iSnipe 11-09-2010 06:01 PM

3 total with one in the chamber. Mostly use Rem 700's.

Might shoot more than one deer and the idea of a spare for mercy killing, like what Buck Holliday mentioned, is a good idea for just in case.

iSnipe

trevorpt 11-09-2010 06:15 PM

1 in the chamber and 2 in the magazine is all that i bring... i dont really plan on shooting more that 1 bullet while hunting though

HardwoodHunter 11-10-2010 06:30 AM

4 in the clip, two extra shells in my pack. While muzzleloading I bring two spare speed loaders and a load in it. One speed loader for each side pocket of my pants. So, if after I shoot with the buck fever I have one in either pocket, which ever ones fastest to get to haha.

Big Z 11-10-2010 07:04 AM

3 or 4 in the mag. Or a loaded ML with 2 or 3 backup loads. Or 2 or 3 arrows.

mackesr 11-10-2010 08:16 AM

For bp I have one in the gun and three speed loaders in my pockets.
For my 7mm I have four in the gun and three in my pockets.
For my 12ga. I have three in the gun and five on my side on my belt.

Daveboone 11-10-2010 04:40 PM

Muzzleloading: three extra. Cartridge rifle: usually magazine capacity, except single shots: then usually a leather shell holder of 5.

Who do you get your 3-1/2" slugs from? Thought about carring them for bear recovery.
Here in Il, I carry a ML for deer season and carry one in the pipe, 2 in SL's in my pocket. That and I carry a single shot .44 Mag as well. One in the pipe, 3 in pocket as well. I started carrying a .460 last year, but it is REALLY rough shooting it from a pop-up blind. Muzzle blast is a BIATCH!!!!

eureka77 11-10-2010 04:45 PM

3 arrows in the quiver, and 3 speedloads for the ML. I don't rifle hunt nomore. I did when I 1st started hunting and I carried so much ammo it was embarrasing. The deer could here me coming a mile away with all the clinging from the shells in my pocket.

Bocajnala 11-10-2010 08:43 PM

It varies depending on what gun I'm carrying, but usually enough to reload twice. Better to have them, just in case.

This season will be my first ever gun hunt I used my bow all last season and enjoyed the challenge. I bought my ML this winter and can't wait to use it this weekend hopefully. Thanks for asking the question because after reading the answers I got an idea about how much to take. I was going to say 2 loads for my ML,one for the deer and one for me for missing but if I missed the deer I may miss myself so I better take 3. All joking aside I got my ML zeroed in yesterday and if I miss it won't be the ML fault that thing is spot on at 100+ easy.Good Hunting to everyone,by the way I will take at least 6 loaders with me,yotes and a big cat are in my area. Someone released a panther in our area and it is very active even the game warden has seen him and has told us to put a round in him if we see it. A nice mount he would make. Later

Champlain Islander 11-11-2010 02:47 AM

4 or 5 in the gun (depends on which one I take) and I cut the plastic bullet holders that come with the Federal ammo I use into a couple of pieces that hold 5 shots each. The holders keep the shells from clacking in my pocket and are easy to use if I need to re-load. I keep one in my pocket for a quick re-load and the other one on my pack just for the security of knowing I have more. I can't think of anything worse than having an empty gun in the field and all the bullets are back at camp or in the truck. With the ML I have the gun loaded and carry 3 speed loaders.

pgrace245 11-11-2010 07:21 PM

My philosophy...better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. Good advice for many aspects of life. That said I carry 1 box (-4 in rifle).

countryboy6990 11-14-2010 09:09 PM

I have my gun loaded 1 in the pipe and 3 in the clip then i also have 7 extras in my coat pocket.
