I agree 100% with the original poster.

You have to remember that hunting is an industry like any other. It's calibrated to take as much money from as many people as possible. One of the challenges for the hunting industry is establishing nondurable products that hunters buy and use up and buy again on a rapid cycle. Historically, the only element of hunting that fits this description is ammunition. A good gun, a good knife, a good set of camos, a good pair of boots--these are things that generally last years (even decades) before needing replacement. However, the modern hunting industry has established a number of "new" nondurable products, many related to ancillary areas like food plots and land management. Most of those seem to have at least some real utility and I'm sure many hunters purchase those products and gotten their money's worth and more. But the whole "bottle of stuff you spray on yourself or elsewhere to improve your hunting in relation to a deer's olfactory process" is HORSE CRAP. These products are no different than the ridiculous trinkets you see being peddled on informercials--BUY THIS SUPERFLUOUS COOKING DEVICE, AND IT'LL FIX EVERYTHING THAT'S WRONG WITH YOUR LIFE!

Actually, that's not a very fair comparison, because YOU CAN AT LEAST KNOW THAT THE COOKING DEVICE DOES BASICALLY WHAT IT'S SUPPOSED TO--COOK FOOD. Not so with bottled scent products. You say your hunting has improved since you started using scent products? Fine, but correlation doesn't prove causation. Maybe your hunting has improved from some other reason. Maybe through experience you've just become a better hunter. Or maybe the deer herds in the area you hunt in have changed habits. There are a million potential explanations for your improved hunting that do not involve your bottled scent product whatsoever.

So we've got a "professional hunter" on TV who's trying to sell you a product. We can't know for sure if this product works. But the guy on TV used it, shot a big buck, and then said, "Boy, this [product] sure works great, blah blah blah..." Not only is this guy being disingenuous (he has no clue whether or not the hunt would've been any different if he hadn't used the product)--HE'S SELLING THE PRODUCT! Is there any doubt that his knowing that the product helped him have a successful hunt is merely the result of his trying to get your money? Isn't it clear that any intellectually honest hunter would have to say, "I have no f'ing clue whether my hunt would've been any different if I hadn't used this stuff."

Here's a tip: if you want your hunting to improve, you have to become a better hunter. This means gaining experience, educating yourself, practicing, seeking out new hunting areas, etc. There is no shortcut to becoming a better hunter. Unless you're a "professional" hunter who has outfitters kowtowing to your every need, it's all hard won.

If you're overweight, how do you drop pounds? Do you buy some pills that you see on some dumb commercial, or do you get down to the very real work of burning calories and restricting your diet? People who continually drop their money on bottles upon bottles of these scent products are no less ridiculous than the fat people sitting on their couches ordering those magic bea--I mean, pills.

Your credibility is slipping away with every post you make. Sorry you don't like portable ground blinds and seeing wild turkeys. They are really fun to hunt you might want to try it some time. Anyway the people who have posted here can see for themselves that you have nothing USEFUL to say and they can form their own opinions to what you are all about. Have a great season and best of luck!
Live it up! Doug

kswild,

Don't know if it's due to ignorance, stupidity grumpy-and-fogie or what, the way you are, but take your pick. You say "...the people who have posted here can see for themselves...". Yes, they can see for themselves, but not what you are thinking. They are more likely thinking you have no sense of humor and are being weird about it and taking it all too seriously. LOL!

This is all in jest Huckleberry, but like the reasons I stated above, one of them is why you just don't get it. People know me here and know I've contributed a lot in helping others and have talked to many of them and they can read this post with more clarity and understanding than you've shown. LOL!

Wow, some people.

=====================
One more thing... I have an arsenal of hunting equipment beyond what most people have because hunting and being out in the woods is something I have the luxury to enjoy. It's a passion. I have 3 ground blinds with my favorite being by ASAT. I could go on with what I have, but that's not important, but for you to error again thinking I don't know groundblinds, that's again proof how you don't get it. I don't know if I should pity you, laugh or what. Your words: "Have a great season and best of luck!" is just a show and a fake. I could do the same, but I wouldn't mean it and I'm not going to fake it. LOL!

Take one where there isn't one.

Many places are different and take different tactics. Going somewhere new, not just a county over and acting the part in an area you know nothing about is the real test. If you know the place well you hunt in then yes it's all possible (I can tell you the spot in my woods that the deer will exit and just about the time) But if it's all knew a guy needs all the help he can get. I enjoy hunting new places every year and have learned the hard way that unless I take every advantage, it's just a scouting trip.

I'd be bored hunting the same places every year and even the native Americans used cover scents. So, as far as keeping tradition alive I think I am.

What I think the problem is here is to much tv. I have no idea what is being talked about when people claim there's a huge sell on scent products, I never see or hear it.

blackhawk_archery 10-16-2010 05:51 PM

sad part about this is you can make your own cover scent if you need it for free.

kswild...you do come off as a know it all. You need to chill out and realize you are not the only one who has ever killed an animal. Live it up....
