Yep the .270 is a great caliber. I had a Ruger M77 a few years ago in .270

Get a Marlin XL7 in either caliber and you'll be fine with any game in North America. My choice is the -06 because you can buy the ammo anywhere in the world for almost half the price of the 300 win and I like to spend lots of time at the range. Also, I know lots of different bullet weights availabe because they are both .30 cal., however, if you are buying factory ammo, lighter bullets are more commonly available for the -06, which will be a plus if you are hunting smaller animals.

Also, the reason I'm shying away from great calibers like the 25-06 or .270, is if you ever happen to want to hunt elsewhere, certain outfitters or states require a 30 cal. (Although, I wouldn't be concerned with hunting any animal in the States with a .270.)
