RE: Shotgun range?

Loner has an excellent point , and I bow to his wisdom . Considering that you can get a servicable smoothbore for less than $100 at Wally World , and rifled or even regular slugs to stuff in it , I see no point in using shot for the reason I posted .

Even if you cant afford a rifled barrel, get a rifled choke tube. Hunting at limited ranges with buckshot is insantity when you could be shooting a sabot slug out to 150yds, Not to mention you owe it to the deer.

I only use my shotgun when it' s close range. If I was going to use slugs I' d use my 30-30.I use 000,less pellets but bigger.

RE: Shotgun range?

you can shoot slugs through your gun just fine.....screw in the improved cylinder choke and get some slugs...they will extend your range alot farther then buckshot if you can shoot the slugs....i really dont like the idea of hunting with buckshot either....even if it was legal i would do it...just doesnt seem right to me...you never know how many pellets are going to hit the vitals and then you dont know how well they will penetrate...32 caliber balls probally dont penetrate well i doubt.....i highly doubt they will ever pass through and leave a good blood trail like a slug hole will.....but hey....if you enjoy shooting buckshot thats your choice......good like....also if you do go with buckshot make sure you know how far you can shoot by actually practicing at them ranges....where you think you can kill a deer subtract 10 yds from that and be safe...not sorry....theres really not an answer to your question as said above....my 3006 can kill past 800ds....but will i do it??? nope...i wouldnt think about it until i shot my gun that far and KNOW i can do it....sure the guns capable but im definently not trained to do such a thing.....good luck

Mauser don' t underestimate buckshot. Within range it is a very deadly load. I' ve killed well over a hundred deer with OO and I guarantee it can pass through a mature deer.

RE: Shotgun range?

First I wouldn' t use the buckshot, get a rifled choke tub or use your most open tube improved cylinder or bigger. Second you can buy 3 1/2" slugs but a 3" is plenty and all the testing I' ve done 2 3/4" seem to pattern the best. Even with 2 3/4" the deer don' t go anywhere!!!!! Much more devisataing than a rifle!!

Practice your shots at the range, you' ll know your range and have confidence to make the shot in the field!

Good Luck!!

RE: Shotgun range?

Are deer slugs illegal where you live ? They kill more surely at greater range than shot . Shot is illegal for deer hunting in most places , and should be . Too much chance of wounding the animal , switch to slugs .
Kevin I will take exception to that statement, buckshot is deadly when used within the ranges it is intended to be used at, where you see the wounding is when someone is shooting deer over 45-50 yards with 2 3/4 inch buckshot. I have killed a ton of deer with buckshot and never had to put a second shot in them, the secret is to know the guns and buckshots limits. I have seen just as many deer wounded with slugs by idiots who think they can take a shot at 150 yards with a slug as I have seen with 60+ yard shots with buckshot. BTW there are a lot of places where slugs are illegal.

Amen to that TAZ... :)
3" mags would be good at 40 no problem...maybe out to 50. I' ve never used 3.5' s but I would guess you' d get a little more range. The main thing is to shoot your gun and see how it patterns. Different brands of shells can shoot differently also.
