Default Anyone ever use a Mosin Nagant?

I was thinking of buying a m14 but it's expensive. I'm now thinking of buying an old Mosin Nagant to hunt deer with, since the rifles are pretty cheap, being around $100. Anybody ever fire one?

They are ballistically similar to a 30-06 and can be easily sporterized. Probably make a great deer rifle for 120 bucks.

They are great guns and so are the K98 Mausers. The only issue is both have weak factory loads more comparable to the 30-30 than the 30-06 (they are supposed to be in the 30-06 range but the manufactures download them for some reason). But I've used my K98 to kill a couple deer it works well enough. The Mosin is a good gun they are fairly accurate as well. Make sure the barrell is not shot out that is the one problem I've had with both the K98 and the Mosin easiest way I've found to check if they will allow you to do it is insert the tip of the bullet into the end of the barrell if it will easily go to the neck leave it alone. You should not be able to get it to go in.

I know there are different models and I heard the bigger model rifles are better for hunting. Do you guys know which model would be the best?

The Mosin Nagant 91/30 is gonna be my next build, youll need to get a scope mount kit and bolt turn down kit if you want a scope. If you handload for it you can get it very close to 06 ballistics.

Were these the ones Cabela's was selling for $99.00? If you get one, let us know what condition it's in.

The Sportsman's Guide used to sell a lot of surplus firearms this way. Still mad at myself for not getting the Argentine K98 when I had the change.

Gander Mountain had some for $99 a few weeks ago. I picked on up and it is in very good shape. Make sure to ask for the remanufactured Mosin in the box. I haven't shot mine yet but the barrel seems to be pretty good, and the action is nice and tight. The muzzle doesn't seem to be eroded too much either.
