I live in Ohio and want to hunt next fall.
I am looking for a shotgun that will be versitile enough to small game hunt then use a slug to hunt deer during gun season.

Any recommendations???

If your looking for the most inexpensive way. You can go to Wal-mart and get a Maverick made by Mossberg 12 guage pump. $169.00 Perfect for small game and target loads for clays.
For Deer, I use the improved choke that comes with it and by rifled slugs for Deer or 00Buck. I like the slugs. pretty acurate. no problem at 50 yards. can hit paper at 100 with no scope.

I bought a Remington 870 express combo 12 gauge 12 years ago and it is still a great gun. I have the regular barrel with interchangeable chokes for bird hunting and put in the rifled barrel with a red dot scope for deer hunting. I am very accurate at 75 yards with the rifled barrel with slugs. I think you can get a combo for $250- $300.

colbye, Welcome to the forum!

========

skarrecrow,

I have a different shotgun I owned for years, but when I get another one, it will be the Remington 870. I've looked around at several models and that attracts me the most. I have also read several threads similar to yours and from what I've read in those replies, many had good reasons why along with several recommendations.

I do have one suggestion and that is to hold several brands and models to get an idea which one feels right for you. The one I have I had most of my life and it feels natural to me.

Good luck,

i agree 100% with going with the remington 870 express magnum combo. it is a very good and reliable all around gun. you can't go wrong with it.

Look into the Mossberg 500 combo, it comes with a field barrel with a few chokes, and a rifled/cantilever barrel, Dicks Sporting Goods has them on sale this week for like $250

Yeah go look into the "combo" shotguns that come with both a bird shot barrel for small game and a slug barrel for deer. The barrels are extremely easy to change on a Remington 870, I have never owned a Mossberg but I am sure barrels remove easy on them too.

If you got the money to spend id go with a semi-auto instead of a pump.
