Learned my lesson on being lazy

So I was lazy wednsday and slept in instead of going into the woods because I thought my spot was a night spot because I had only been seeing deer at night. It is late archery season so I go to check the trail camera today and I have a gorgeous 8 point at my spot at 7am that wednsday morning this camera is set up 15 yards from my stand. I am disgusted and it makes me sick knowing that I could have had a shot at this deer

Hunt4Life23 12-17-2009 08:07 PM

not gonna kill a deer unless your out there in the woods. next time dont think twice about goin out! good luck, hopefully he will come by when ur in the stand

I'm not going to remind you of the number of times I recommended for you to keep persisting.

I'm not going to remind you that I said it takes hard work along with patience to be successful.

I won't rub it in and say I told you so.

P.S. "You didn't think I wouldn't see this post, did you? LOL!"

Me Too

Don't beat yourself up too bad. I have had a case or two of the sleeping bag stay in myself. You do beat yourself up though when you wake up and look out at a bluebird morning.

DeerandbearhoG 12-18-2009 12:10 AM

At least you got to sleep. I let a good 8pt sneak behind me last month when i did bother to get up, drive all the way to middletown and sat in the rain all day. thats huntn

BTW if it makes you feel better that buck was at your stand about 16 minutes before legal shooting light (sunrise is 7:15 now):D

Woodsmaster742 12-18-2009 02:17 AM

Lol well it is a good looking buck though!

I need to get some trail camera from my area. Was good for Bow and early BP but dead now.

I put my nephew into the hottest spot I could find scouting earlier this yr. I just can't get it into his head that the more time he sits in the woods the better chance he has at shooting his first deer. But I always seem to find him in my truck sleeping when I walk out.

superstrutter 12-18-2009 05:35 AM

Look at it this way, he'll be even bigger next year.

scribbler444 12-18-2009 05:35 AM

Iv been out more this year during bow and gun then any other year. I sit alot of full days whenever possible otherwise just morning and evening hunts. I went out this morning to this spot sat by 545 and at 630 hear loud crunching I could not see anything it was still dark it came from the right rite where the picture was takin then it walked riteback where it came from within 5 minutes. I never got a glance of it. It had to be him it was only 30 mins earlier then this picture was takin. Ill be out agian tonight and tomorrow. Were supposed to be getting a storm tomorrow so hopefully hell be moving.

That's the curse of the trail camera. It will second guess your every move. For as many times as you miss a buck by sleeping in, I would venture to guess you see plenty at 4:35 on a .....Tuesday afternoon while you would have been at work. I know it happens to me alot.

I always feel guilty for the hunts I miss when the season is gone unless it was a productive season. I always say I'll hunt real hard next weekend and before you know it, the season is over.

superstrutter 12-18-2009 05:53 AM

Don't ya'll know the bucks ALWAYS walk in front of your stand when your not there. That's natures way of sticking it to you.

bowfly 12-18-2009 08:00 AM

it's the trail cam's fault...always showing you deer when you are not in the woods...i smell a conspiracy :) lol

scribbler444 12-19-2009 05:55 PM

This morning was mighty frustrating. Sat in stand by 515 becaue the snow is so crunchy and I want there to be time to calm down before light. Like clockwork he comes in at 645 just at first light. He doesnt come past the camera he stays off to my right in a thicket and does not present me with a single shot then walks off. Tomorrow is another day he had been coming all week around the same time hunted friday morning to and he came at 630 still dark couldnt see through scope. He wasnt spooked today and we are in the process of getting 7 inches of snow so my scent in there will be wiped clean I think theres a good chance of him coming tomorrow morning as well. Also saw 3 does with a the same 4 point I shoulder shot a few weeks ago he was running strong no gimp at all so that made me happy. He was about 150 yards out

GTOHunter 12-20-2009 07:53 AM

Sounds like You are getting smarter by patterning the Buck when he comes in...now You just need to get in there scent-free and quietly so You can harvest that Big Buck! ;)

Maybe You need to set off a little ways away from your existing stand so he doesn't know your in there hunting him?

Champlain Islander 12-20-2009 08:31 AM

I know what you mean. I have a neighbor who has a nice stand on his land and he decided to sleep in mornings and told me I could use his stand...actually insisted on it. I got a real nice 6 with the smoke pole out of it. I walked back to his house to get my truck and he was just getting out of bed. It is a curse to not be a morning person.;)

WVCritter 12-20-2009 01:55 PM

There are no guarantees when it comes to deer hunting except that if you're not there, then they aren't gonna be spooked by your presence. Had you went out that morning, who's to say he wouldn't have scented you or got pushed out when you came in. But again, you will never know for sure unless you get out there. Nice buck though.

Champlain Islander 12-20-2009 02:10 PM

You can't get them if you aren't there. Hunt 5 days in a row and take the 6th off. That is the day he will be there. Works out like that more times than not.

Ain't it the truth though. Let a newbie hunt your stand on the 6th day and it's almost a guarantee he'll be there.

jepcho 12-20-2009 02:47 PM

What you need to do is move your trail cam to a different area. Right now, everytime a nice deer shows up during shooting light you are gonna beat yourself up about it. ;)

Big Buck Dave 12-20-2009 03:08 PM

Hey he looks like kin to this one! This was my first deer ever, taken with a bow.

iSnipe 12-20-2009 04:27 PM

Big Buck Dave,

Is that buck there a 6 point?

Yes, and dressed at 142# if I remember correctly. Harvested at Quantico Marine Base.
