So let me get this straight, I'm going to NC to hunt with a old Marine buddy and they drive deer in afternoon. He told me to bring a shot gun and some 00 buck, what choke do I use??

Woodrow88 12-11-2009 05:58 AM

Not understanding the humor?? I need to know what choke is best to use with 00 buck.

Woodrow88 12-11-2009 06:49 AM

They use it alot here in MD for sika deer hunting in the swamps. Kinda like jump hunting. I was with a group who all vollied 3 rounds at a sika at 35 yards, and I happen to be using sluggers and took it down.

Isn't it si T ka deer?

8. Do not engage in "flame-wars" or excessive exchange of confrontational postings. Debate is important, but users should not try to "pick a fight" with one another.

Not in merryland. Asian small elk transplanted in early 1900's. Got loose in the swamps. Only free ranging substainable herd in the country of that speices. TX has another. Toughest deer I ever seen. A 90lb sika will kick the crap out of a 200lb WT. We call em swamp rats.

I have no idea what is going on here. The thread was about shooting 00 buck, I asked a simple question to some other hunters here for some advice on a choke?? Doing drives for deer in NC is very common. What am I missing besides that X factor is a complete A$$? He is a new member maybe one of the administrators need to teach him some manners.

Nobody, I mean nobody should shoot at game without at least patterning thier gun. Its just irresposible. Just an opinion. I hope that is not taken offensively. Ballpark, use either full, modified, or mod improved. Take those three and pattern that with your ammo. Nobody can tell you exactly what to use. I use modified with brass coated 00 rem buckshot. Hope it helps.

Or you could use slugs and go deer hunting.

Woodrow88 12-11-2009 08:10 AM

Thanks big Country I appreciate you helping me out. I planned on patterning the gun before my trip. My friend said he didn't use a choke, just wanted to get it right.

Good call.

Since your new here, let me just tell you how it is around here...yes, its true, somebody knows something you don't....its fine to get in a "debate" here, but when you start mocking people and $hit like that, YOU will be called out on it, and if that doesnt fix it, YOU will be banned by a Mod. So you think Im bluffing? Keep acting like a 10 year old and see for yourself.

Kudos

Big chunk of lead, moving slowly. It obliterates it's target!
Is there something good about a slow moving bullet?

It seems like every time this topic is brought up, half the people like the results of buckshot and half the people don't like it.

So.....if you use buckshot, you have a 50% chance at a favorable outcome. And, conversely, a 50% chance at a poor outcome. That's just statistics :D

On the question of what choke to use with buckshot: In my 870, Mod or Imp. was fine. Full didn't seem to improve patterns like I'd expected.

I hunted a club were we ran dogs for several years. Shot a lot of deer with buckshot. I found that the plated/buffered shot patterned best; I preferred Win Supreme in 00 and 000.

Get some flipchart paper, pace off 20 yards, shoot. Do same at 25, 30, 35. You'll see the diff. On my shotgun, pattern starts spreading pretty thin after thirty yards or so, if memory serves.

At 25 yards, buckshot is deadly. Pretty good in the 30 yard range, broadside shot is best. Past that - over 40ish? - effectiveness plummets. Pattern you shotgun, remember it's a short-range proposition.

Good hunting!
