First off, years ago something like that would just tick me off to no end. Nowadays through maturity or whatever it may be, I have learned something else. I hardly ever get cross with people like that because I know for a fact, their life sucks or will suck. I've seen way too many times for it to be just plain coincidence.

People like that have a lot more going on in their life that is even worse. Think about it. People like these are so warped they think this is funny? They lack a moral center. They lack a sense of sportsmanship. They lack woodsmanship. They lack courtesy. They lack kindness. They lack an overall decency towards other people.

With all that lack, there's no way someone like them can have a decent life; no way. Usually when you see someone lacking in the most basic life principles, they are screwed up beyond what one would even think about it.

I no longer dwell on people who cross me or do me wrong. I often laugh now. I often smile inside because I know the truth and the truth is these type people have problems beyond what I know and these type people will only draw more trouble to their lives being that way. So whenever a situation like this arise in your life, let it go and realize instead of them being their own best friend...

... they are their own worst enemy.

The fellows who shot to screw with your hunt were possibly out to do just that. I've not had to deal with such people where I live, but have seen them protest in cities and they could be part of any number of animal rights groups. One of their new tactics is to actually buy a hunting liscense which supports game management, but they have no intention of using it to hunt animals. They have a tag and a rifle, and a right (read excuse) to be on public land pretending to hunt, but actually trying to stop hunters from having a successful hunt. They can shoot and make noise and ruin everyones hunting that way.
Most states have passed laws making it punishable to harrass hunters in the field. But if you are pretending to be a hunter too and have bought your tags and are on public land, you can stumble around and be a pain in the ass and excuse yourself as being new at hunting and accidentally getting in everyones way. They say they shot at a deer and missed and hit that tree, so what? What can you do about it? They may have actually been hunting for hunters like you, to intentionally screw up their hunts. The bad thing is they work in rotating groups so a different person with a different tactic may interupt you later in the day, and a different person tomorrow and so on, so that you never have a harassment case against anyone. If the same person/persons screwed with you several times you might have a case and prove it was intentional.
I wouldn't even write this for fear of giving anti's ideas, but believe me, they already know all the tricks. They have meetings and plan these things. The guys who screwed with you, IF in fact they were anti's would have moved on through the woods and been careful not to cross paths with you again, especially the same day. If you gave up hunting and left the area they would have known it because someone else they called would have been around to check on you later. The second person would maybe be friendly and ask for directions or the time of day or whatever, very anoying but not illegal, unless you could prove they were connected to the others and were harassing you to ruin your hunt. They would hang around and talk loud and try your patience, but not really do anything wrong otherwise. If and when you got fed up and asked them to leave they would, trailing whatever scent they had cooked up to scare deer away from the evil hunters. You get a big enough group of these people and they shuttle from public land to public land saving all the critters they can. Always moving out to a different wildlife area once they've pissed off a few folks, and having another group come in after them, so that every hour or so there are more idiots in your way.
I hope it wasn't people like this harassing you, but it could have been. If it was they will be hunting you everytime they see your truck or any hunters truck in a public area. Some will actually ask you, "hey I saw a white Ford in the parking lot, thats a nice truck, is it yours? You say yes and they know more than you want these people to know. They will have recorded your liscense plate and may also call it in as a supicious vehicle road hunting, or whatever. They have all those TIP lines you know where people can call in poachers and remain anonymous. They do this also to make you not want to hunt here anymore and to possibly actually get you caught on some technicality so they can call you a poacher and further their cause somehow. Anyway now a game warden who may have been catching them at their criminal activity is now looking for you instead.

I have been tormented by poachers, trespassers, thieves, kids on 4wheelers, assorted jealous neighbors and other azzholz, you name it, on my lease.
Someone put their deer guts under a stand onetime.

Just the other day, the land owner asked if I minded if he cut his 300 acres of soy beans. ?? He was serious, and hated to have to cut them while I was hunting, but had too because rain was coming.
Im sure he knows his tractor doesnt scare the deer around there any, but he was just being courteous.
That really put things in perspective for me.
There are still decent people out there.
I try to remain decent. Thats how I got and keep the lease!

I understand your frustration. My family owns a fairly large (130) acres of property with a few gas lines running through it. Every year I deal with the same thing. Sitting in my stand and suddenly here comes 15 quads and dirtbikes ripping down the gas line. I have had it out with these people numerous times. I started out by trying to be nice and explaining to them that they have all spring summer and early fall to ride and hunters only have the woods for a short time so try to be courteous and let us hunt undisturbed. After this tactic did not work I tried to explain to them that it is private property and they are not permitted on it. Their rebuttle was that they are on the gas line and they can ride it if they want to. After trying to explain to them that the gas company has the right of way, not them, it STILL DID NOT get through their thick skulls!! I have tried contacting authorites and they say there is nothing we can do. Does anyone have an idea?

I would just put a gate at the ends of it. Have it padlocked. Call the gas company and tell them you are sending a key. Then put up no trespassing sings on either side of the gate. Then they can be arrested. If that does not work then I would just throw out a bunch of those big metal headed button nails on the trail. If anyone gets mad about that tell them you must have dropped them when you were going to the other end to nail your signs on there!

I would definitely be frustrated. Glad nothing like that has ever happened to me. There is no reason to do that to a fellow hunter.

The gas company has the right away to tranfer their product and maintain their lines, you own the property. I would think you have the right to keep trespassers off your property. I think the authorites just don't what to be bothered.
