Default Licking Branch Question.

How would you go about making a licking branch?
I know it starts with a peace od wire, or strong string, between two trees.
And a branch, hanging on the wire, or string.
Just above the deers height.

Other than this I am blank.

So how many make licking branchs, and how do you make them?
Do you use scents, or what, or just a branch over a deer trial?

Thank you.

I have never "made" one per say. I usually just find a spot that has a branch hanging down about the right height, and make my mock scrape under that.

I agree with bigdaddy. I usually just find low hanging branches or just bend one down until its the desired height.

on a licking branch the deer is secreting scent from the tear duct so it would make sense to put scent on the man made one

Sometimes I find one that is too low. I'll take a string and pull it upwards until it's about 5 1/2' high. Sometimes one is too high, so then I"ll pull it lower.

For an artificial licking branch, I like to find a good location and then find a good branch. I'll then take 2 screws and one of my cordless drills and screw the branch so it is at the right height. I screw in the screws about 1 1/2" to 2" apart. If you only use one screw the deer or the weight of the branch will eventually have it sag down. 2 screws keeps it secure. You can also use a hammer and 2 nails, but that's too easy. LOL!

After I set up the branch, then I'll make the mock scrape right underneath it. Sometimes I'll place lure on the branch, but mostly I'll almost always place urine/lure right in the mock scrape.
