strange! scrape question

I've been freshening up a fairly new scrape with young buck urine with the intention of hunting over it soon. I've had pretty good luck with this strategy over the last few years.
For the second time in 3 years i've had a deer take a crap right in the middle of the scrape. What gives? i find this to be very strange. What could this mean in the deer world? After it happened to me 2 seasons ago i found it odd. Now after it happening again it can't be just a coincidence. BTW the first incident happened in the same area about 300 yards away in '07. Has any one else ever seen this or am i into a strange rogue crapper? thanks for your help

just like dogs markin their turf with peee..bears craop on their own stuff ..i herd a story of a guy who got pumbled by a bear and mostly buried and the bear crapped on him..the guy played dead and the bear had a snak fer later, and the bear left and the guy got away

Yeah, I would guess just a territorial thing. IDK

Never heard of that it does sound interesting.Keep an I on it and let us know what happens.

nchawkeye 10-25-2009 02:39 PM

I've seen it many times, the does do it...

x-mountie 10-25-2009 02:49 PM

Half: How does that relate to deer hunting ??? I've never heard of a deer burying some one for a snak later.

I've also found on about 6-7 occasions where a bucked did his business right on a suspended log. Not a log on the ground, but one you have to take a step over; one that was suspended. That's enough to tell me he was trying to do that. I've seen where fox and coyote took dumps on objects before... very accurately too. LOL!

I found the exact same thing today while scouting. This was a primary scrape under a holy tree a1/4 mile or so back in the woods. This scrape has appeared in the same place for the last 3 years and this morning,it was torn up,smell heavily of urine and was also crapped in. I take it that this was a territorial response to another buck using the scrape. About 20 yards away, I found a smaller scrape that was half heartedly pawed out and took it to be the work of the smaller buck. I plan on sitting on this scrape one day this week if I get the right wind. Tony

Primos makes a fake deer crap made for scrapes so im assuming it has something to do with the breeding.

When a deer has gotta go, he's gotta go. I see droppings in and around scrapes all the time. Nothing uncommon there.

I mess around with scrapes and mock scrapes all the time and i see this regularly(no pun intended) I would guess that when a deer goes to urinate their body has a reflex that says to go ahead and crap as well. All animals do this!! Havnt you ever noticed when deer crap or urinate many times they do one right after the other...thats whats happening at the scrape you see.

i have heard of dudes taking a leak in scrapes to torque off mature bucks...but taking a dump? wow, that is new...guess i need to eat indian food before heading out the next day :)

Baybuzzard 10-27-2009 06:36 AM

Does dump in scrapes all the time. The Primos pellets are designed for use in mock scrapes...they are supposed to give off a sustained release of deer scent that is activated by moisture. As far as hunting over scrapes...pretty much proven to be a waste of time.

i've been successful on two occasions with this method of hunting over scrapes. Granted they are not the biggest wisest buck in the woods but decent bucks none the less.

Proven where??? You are hunting under the wrong scrapes. Find a community scrape and then tell me its a waste of time!!!!

Maybe I used wrong choice of words...low percentage tactic maybe better choice. I have had a mature buck come down a trail a major scrape was on...he checked the branch but did not work the scrape...and I have had a mature buck make a scrape where there was none...again on a trail. Scrapes are where I hang my game cameras...and trust me I know the difference between useful scrapes and useless ones. Rarely get pics of mature bucks. Lots of youngsters and does though. Go to this link and read this thread...good information.

I am not so sure about it either, I was busted today checking out a new scrape made last night. It wasn't your average small buck that busted me. It caught me off guard when i was looking at his antler rubs. The scrape was right beside one of them. He also had a trail with another scrape on it as well. They were not very big scrapes but they were sure scrapes and he was most definately using them today.. I will be trying to get near one tomorrow to see if I can get a shot at him. I couldn't see his rack very good but he was with in the 200lb dressed range and very alert..

I find that very odd a buck crapping in its own scrape. :bash: I don't think I've ever seen. I've seen scrapes where another deer came around and dribbled through it. Especially when your in a heavy deer area. Maybe its an old buck that has rectal dysfunctions and loses it when he pisses?????????? Dunno?

Happens in DE too...maybe its a sign from the big boy for the lil buck

Fieldmouse 10-27-2009 06:36 PM

No biggie, its a buch trying to get in an easy lay. Don't tell me you've never got the nasty on someone else's work! However, on your strategy, I love to use fake scrapes. I began doing this many years ago and will tell you it works well. If not to get the big boy but good enough to get the non-shooter's attention rather than have him stand around and bust you on scent. Get him beyond your scent.

tim03b 10-28-2009 07:29 AM

deer thought it was a crappy scrape so he took a dump in it.
