Hunting alone

I hunt on public land, often times by myself. My wife doesn't like the fact that I'm out there with a bunch of other people with guns. Honestly.... it makes be a bit edgy too.
Do you guys hunt alone during the gun season?

iSnipe 10-14-2009 06:35 PM

Almost always. It's not a concern for me to have others out there with guns. It's a concern if I'm shot at because I'd have to think if I have the restraint to not fire back. LOL!

My main concern is walking around in the low light. You never know with some idiots out there that shouldn't be. I do carry a flash light about 1/2 the time and a cell phone almost always. The phone is on vibrate so not to get disturbed whilst I'm getting my 450 yard groove on. LOL!

I like hunting alone, yet I like the company of others to teach, learn and share the moments with.

Normally with rifles I hunt alone, but with shotguns I hunt with others.

I hunt alone in large wilderness areas all the time. To make it worse nobody knows where I am. I move around a lot and do a lot of tracking. I might be here today and 25 miles away tomorrow. I check in every evening. I also plan to spend the night in the woods every time out. If something happens they will have to look for my truck and go from there. Be prepared and you should be OK.

Ditto. It has driven my wife nuts over the years, but frankly, much of the area is hit or miss with cell reception, and I'm so far back that even if hunting with multiple hunters, your pretty much screwed if badly injured. In fact, the more hunters, firearms, and grab assin that goes on, the bigger the chance bad chit happens.

There are a few golden rules to live by , hunting this way: ALWAYS carry compass/map, and don't step on, what you can step over.;)

popeye2 10-15-2009 04:11 AM

Most of the time I hunt alone. I try to hunt the deep woods so most places that I hunt have light to moderate hunting pressure.

I always try to follow a few simple safety rules.

- I tell someone where I'm going and an estimated time of when I expect to return.
- Carry a cell phone in areas where you have coverage.
- I also wear orange, normally a hat and vest. If I'm hunting brushier areas, I'll wear more orange than normal(coat instead of a vest).
- If an area doesn't feel safe for whatever reason, I will usually pass on hunting there.

I leave a note on my wipers saying when I expect t return. Put it in a baggie to keep dry. I always have a late return as I don't leave a post until dark dark. I always tell someone approx where I am at and do have a cell but tiurned off most times.

Thanks guys. I hunted this morning... by myself :s4:
My first stop, maybe a 4-500 acre area, had five vehicles parked in the lot. I skipped that one as I'm not too trusting of having to walk by that many people in low light... even with blaze orange and a light.
Second stop had no one. Saw one doe way out of my comfort range with a muzzle loader and open sights. Saw lots of turkeys though.
Thanks again for the input.

Canuck33 10-15-2009 12:03 PM

I hunt about 90% by myself although with intro videoing to the mix I will have someone there more often but when I hi the big woods in the Dacks I'm solo, just the way I like it

PAThwacker 10-15-2009 12:23 PM

I hunt alone all the time on public land. Been doing it forever, and until last year had no trouble.
I got lost one evening, last October, by getting turned around in a swamp thicket. I had my climber, pack and bow strapped to it. Such a heavy load, I opted to take an easier way out. Turned into a 4 hour disaster: equipment dashing, no cell service, 20 mins by car to the nearest traveled road. I scrambled through the swamp thicket for 4 hours, bruising my body head to toe, losing gear, and honestly could have died that night.

Hoyt_shooter02 10-15-2009 05:59 PM

Glad you came out of it alright. I hunt private land and at first was pretty careless with my safety. I didn't communicate where I was going or when I would be home. That is until I got lost one night. I was about 2-2 1/2 miles from the road/house (friends land) on a moonless night. I was tracking a deer I had arrowed app. 2 hrs. earlier and didn't really pay attention to where the trail was leading me. Then, my headlamp went out, and I didn't have any spare batteries with me. I literally couldn't see my hand in front of my face it was so dark. Admittedly I was rattled and almost panicked. Once I settled down and got my senses, I was able to hear a train off in the distance and figure out where west was. Any way now I carry spare batteries, and extra light, cell phone, and let my wife know where I'm going and about when I should be home.

I hunt both with my friends and alone at times. During gun season though I I wear my hunter orange but I only bow hunt. Yes... even during gun season.

PAThwacker 10-16-2009 09:44 AM

I was't panicked but I was putting my body through punishment. Swamp thicket, intertwined rhodedendrons, water, muck... trip, fall, land on rocks, for 30ft...hit open water, turn left 40 yards open water, turn right scramble. I had the backpack/bow, lights, but no water, food, nor wits by the third hour of madness in the swamp.

bowfly 10-16-2009 09:48 AM

alone, but i make a point to always let 2 people, at least, know where i am

.

Five people hunting on 500 acres? That seems reasonable to me.

Sheridan 10-16-2009 10:02 AM

I like the idea of, "I'm always prepared to spend the night".

Great advise !!!

Beezer 10-17-2009 05:51 PM

I can feel grateful. I'm by myself unless my son goes, which is rarely. Luckily, I hunt the area around my house and he knows where every cornpile, stand or blind is and can lead anyone to them. For the most part I only have to worry about falling out of a stand, getting snakebit or attacked by something or my biggest fear....doghunters who don't have permission to shoot on the property and shoot at anything that moves when their dogs are coming to the road. When dogs are coming, I try to move out of the woods ASAP and get to the road but I've actually had to drop my stomach and yell to keep the idiots from shooting a couple times.

I didn't know if there was only one person per vehicle nor where they were. I was not very familiar with the property due to limit scouting. If there was someone in "my" spot, I'm not sure I'd know where to go other than to turn around and walk out.

Father Forkhorn 10-17-2009 07:50 PM

I hunt alone. I let people know where I am beforehand.

halcon 10-18-2009 10:55 AM

I often hunt alone and have even done DIY hunts in other states when I was younger . Now its mostly just around the place .

TNGal 10-19-2009 03:42 AM

When my husband and I cannot hunt togheter, and one of us goes alone we always let each other know where we are going, what stand we are going to hunt and an estimated time to be home, We will always text one another when we are out of our stand.

rab123 10-19-2009 03:59 AM

i work weekends and hunt by myself most of the time.ive actually come to prefer hunting by myself.i hunt public land, too.last year i drove 600 miles and hunted in another state by myself and enjoyed it.the only downside is getting a downed animal out when your alone, but if you plan for it,its not that big of a problem.working weekends, its either hunt by myself or dont hunt.so,ive gotten comfortable going solo.

ElkNutz 10-19-2009 03:59 AM

Tell the wife your safer there then you were in your car driving there.

Kid 10-19-2009 01:33 PM

I hunt by myself most of the time. I let my Wife know where I'll be and when I should be calling her when I get back to an area with cell phone reception.
