Do you hunt over Bait?
Do you hunt over bait? I hunt over corn I don't think it will effect a big mature buck. I have not ever seen a big buck some in to corn in daylight.

RE: Do you hunt over Bait?
I call it a lure. My method contradicts all I have heard. Found it by accident. My wife and I spend time in areas without a bathroom. She had to urinate and I said just pull you pants down and go there. A week later there was buck rubs and scrapes all over the exact spot. Works most the time for her ,but not my urine. Over the years I have polished the method by using used sanitary napkins. |
RE: Do you hunt over Bait?
Baiting is illegal in Indiana, including mineral licks and attractant products that the deer can consume. Yes, even Trophy Rock.
|
RE: Do you hunt over Bait?
Baiting is illegal in MA... i will hunt over apple trees, but nothing that is not naturally there. I do hunt over food plots out of state sometimes.
I see nothing wrong with it... just cannot do it here... |

RE: Do you hunt over Bait?
We almost went 3 months without this topic coming up....I was thinking we might make it to 4 this time! :D Im guessing this time it will only make it to 7 pages and 2 fights break out!

RE: Do you hunt over Bait?
None!
|
RE: Do you hunt over Bait?
No baiting here. I do bow hunt around apple trees when thereare apples. Rifle hunting is in the big woods and there aren't fields or apple trees within many miles. Best results are to track them down and /or set up ambush points using natural terrain.

RE: Do you hunt over Bait?
If it's legal and you want to hunt over corn, then do it. Don't worry what anybody else thinks. They have their way of hunting and you have yours. If it's illegal, then don't do it.

People who hunt with bait are often child molestors and shoplifters who also drown puppies in gunny sacks and smoke crack while worshipping Satan. They are also big fans of Dog the Bounty Hunter and Little People, Big World.[:@]

RE: Do you hunt over Bait?
I just get a kick out of people who say that they don't hunt over bait, yet plant food plots on their property. Food plots won't guarantee that deer will come to you(neither will feeders spitting out corn), but you ARE trying to attract deer with either method so technically it should be considered baiting. In my home state baiting is illegal, yet you can plant food plots and hunt your heart out over them. It really doesn't make much sense. I know people try to justify it by saying they are just supplementing the deers food supply with food plots, but in my opinion deer really shouldn't be fed by man. They are wild animals and should fend for themselves. If they come to feed at a cornfield or something it's one thing, but in most cases that corn was not put out there only for the deer to feed at. I am not saying here that baiting is wrong or should be illegal, but I just think that food plots and any other form of baiting are really one and the same and should be viewed as the same by hunters and state game departments.
|
RE: Do you hunt over Bait?
I agree. Why do hunt a feeder? To kill deer. Why do you hunt a food plot? To kill deer. Very simple, isn't it?
|
RE: Do you hunt over Bait?
i never hunt over bait if you do use a deer attratant like c'mere deer i think that is just called shooting not hunting
|
RE: Do you hunt over Bait?
It is not legal to hunt over bait in Oregon. Only mineral blocks. Even if it was, I wouldn't. I do use salt blocks for deer/elk hunting, but they don't seem to work to good. I'm not to fond of baiting.

[8D] Baiting is illegal in Iowa, but food plots are OK, at least to my knowledge. In MN feeders and mineral licks can be used up until two weeks before the start of deer season, then they must be taken down. Again, food plots are OK... the MN DNR even has two clover plots planted in the public land that abuts my brothers land, and I shot me deer last year across one of them. My opinion of baiting is that I don't like it, but I'm not going to tell someone else not to do it if it's legal in your state. I also don't equate food plots with baiting, since the food plots are available to the deer 24/7. Most people who use bait set their feeders to throw food at set times. If your feeder throws food at 8am and 4pm every day, then that's baiting by my definition. Mike |
RE: Do you hunt over Bait?
I didn't know this topic was so poular I am kinda new here sorry:(but just wandering what you guys hunt over.
|
RE: Do you hunt over Bait?
Hunting over 'bait' is not my idea of hunting. That is what I call shooting. A food plot is not, in my opinion, baiting. Same thing as hunting a stand of oak trees or a field of soy beans. I don't know, just my thoughts.
|
RE: Do you hunt over Bait?
I decided not to take the bait, however,I am surprised at the number of replies that call baiting " shooting ", not hunting.

RE: Do you hunt over Bait?
Irarily hunt deer over/on any food source be it natural or man "encouraged";)!
For the record legal to bait here andI don't think it's shooting vs hunting. Why? b/c I have actual experience with baiting deer and know more is involved then laying out slop to be successful on mature animals. |

I was hunting a small bait pile that the property owner put p\out (He hunts different stand and I go where he isn't, bait or not) The bait pile was in the woods a bit and there was a bean field that was cut very poorly out in front of me. Mature deer RARELY went to the bait pile, 90% of the mature deer went straight for the beans and RARELY do I see a buck on the feed piles. In my opinion, feed pileswork great for yearling but that is about it. I got my biggest Michigan buck on a shooting lane near a bait pile and I was extremely proud but I got my biggest buck this year by predicting a low area I thought the deer would be coming out of in the afternoon and when he dropped I was a lot prouder of that deer than my Michigan one. The yell I let out was proof of that. Do what is legal and don't worry about what others say. You should be proud no matter how you kill a deer, as long as its legal and not with your car!! :D |
RE: Do you hunt over Bait?
I refuse to shoot a deer that is in the act, or even exhibits a notion, of eating, drinking, reproducing, or mingling. Now, if I see one just acting casual, minding his own business, he's down.

RE: Do you hunt over Bait?
I do have one ladder stand over a food plot.I only hunted it about 6-7 times.I prefer to find good places and throw up my climber.

One outfitter said he didn't bait with corn, but he had his stands set on the edge of corn fields/food plots. He said, "when it's that late in the season and not as much food is available, it was the most effective means he knew of." Two outfitters said they baited with corn piles and said "that was the only way he could "ALMOST" guaranty deer would show up for his clients." The question would be, has anyone planted an apple tree or an oak with the thoughts of deer coming into this "modified-human" set-up? Moral of the story... Do what you chose, as long as it's legal and weather you call it shooting or hunting!!! |

I closest thing I use to bait is a deer call when I need it.

RE: Do you hunt over Bait?
This is a boiling issue in WI,, about 1/2 the state here is baited and the other 1/2 is banned to protect the herd from disease spread. Yet what gets me is they are O.K. with thespread in on 1/2 but not in the other..
But it really boils down to this.. If you are a Baiter,, The deer are doing all the hunting and you arre simply shooting them... If you do not bait .. You need to hunt for the deer and then hope for a good shot. Now we all use things to get deer close to a set up for a shot.... This is not what his is about.. Some want to say a food plot is the same as a bait pile replenished daily or what have you.. Then why would it be so hard to pick a tree to hunt out of in a non bait agriculture state?? all trees should produce the same results if they are one and the same.. The fact is food plots/farm fieldschange.. forcing us to change and hunt for the deer.. Or youcan just bait the deer repeadily and let them hunt for you?? It is alla matter of how you want to be percieved...That's all. NH |
RE: Do you hunt over Bait?
Ohio just made baiting leagal a year or two ago, and I don't have a problem with it

ORIGINAL: Schultzy Do you hunt over Bait? Again, Im all for what is legal and would rather not bait, but where it is legal and if you hunt a small piece of property amongst a vast number of small properties that all bait than you pretty much have to. Again im not for it, but try to hunt in an area where EVERYONE else baits and you don't, well, then you'll just be watching chipmunks and squirrels. Id 10x rather hunt without bait if it is possible and hope that Illinois NEVER thinks about changing the law. |

WOW! I just looked at the poll results. There sure are a lot ofhypocrites on this site... :)
I've do both. When I hunt public land, baiting is not legal therefore it's not even on my mind. When I hunt private land, sometimes I bait and sometimes I don't. The bottom line is that any kind of human introduced item that's purpose is to attract animals for hunting is the definition of "BAIT". Whether it be a food plot of any kind, loose corn, deer urine, etc... If the animals would otherwise not be there without your product, it's baiting. |

of course
|
RE: Do you hunt over Bait?
Im gonna call it like it is! Baiting is for lazy people who don't know how or don't want to put the effort into hunting! If I offend you,im not sorry!!:D
|
RE: Do you hunt over Bait?
Im neither for nor against, but I will comment on personal experience. When I hunted private land, I put apile of cornout. I got to watch does and immature bucks eat, fight, poop, scrape, etc. I only had one mature buck come in (followed does), but he hung back and busted me while the does were in the corn. I then started hunting topography, and began killing mature bucks. Now I hunt public land, where baiting is illegal, and tagged out within two months last fall. In my opinion, you can severely limit yourself by watching bait. And at least teach your son/daughter how to hunt land features, just in case.
