Scent-Loc worth it?
is scent-lok gear worth all the money? i have talked to some hunters who swear by it, and have the trophies to back it up. i have also talked to hunters who dont use anything like it, and kill deer every year. any opinions?
|
RE: Scent-Loc worth it?
i have it and use it but the more i think about it i think its not worth all the money just wash your clothes, shower and spray down,
|
RE: Scent-Loc worth it?
i think that stuff is just a waste of money. i buy regular hunting clothes then i buy the spray and the wash stuff. its alot cheaper than buying the scent-free clothes
|
RE: Scent-Loc worth it?
I use nothing. I usually have on my work clothes when I hunt and kill 6-7 deer a year. I keep the sun at my back, the wind in my face and stay still. I hunt on the ground and shot my biggest buck so far on the ground with my bow. Waste of money.
|
RE: Scent-Loc worth it?
Nope, don't waste you money.
|
RE: Scent-Loc worth it?
Here we go again...
![]() Seriously, the stuff doesn't work. |
RE: Scent-Loc worth it?
It's who you ask. I don't use it so I say spend your money on other things like more guns, bows, etc.
|
RE: Scent-Loc worth it?
Don't waste your mnoey - but do use products to reduce your scent, and play the wind.
|
RE: Scent-Loc worth it?
Hunt the wind, it works.
|
RE: Scent-Loc worth it?
I have some friends who swear by it because the season they started using it they saw noticably more deer. When I get them talking there were other things they also changed, like deciding to be way more concious of scent control!
Does it work as advertised? Heck no! Does it reduce scent that comes off your body? Maybe. does it "reactivate" in the dryer? Nope, chemists say no way. |
RE: Scent-Loc worth it?
I have scent-lock pants and a jacket that are light weight. They were on sell a year or so back. I wasn't sure if they would work, but they were cheap so I bought them.
I'm still not sure if they work or not I killed deer before I bought them and I've killed deer after so at least it didn't hurt. I needed some light weight hunting clothes anyways so it was worth a try. I do manage my scent by playing the wind and I wash my hunting clothes in the scent free stuff. That seems to be working for me. |
RE: Scent-Loc worth it?
one word ,NO
|
RE: Scent-Loc worth it?
I do have to admit, Scent-Lok does have the most vibrant camo colors I have seen. I would probably buy some of their stuff just for that. All of the other stuff I see at Bass Pro, Gander, and Sportsmans Warehouse are either faded looking or fade after one wash.
|
RE: Scent-Loc worth it?
I take scent precautions on day trips, but then go to deercamp in the Ozark hills and killmy best deer after a week with no shower. Chuck Adams once said it didn't matter if you took all the scent precautions or sat in stand smoking a cigar, if a deer got downwind, he wouldbust you.Several years later, he had changed his mind in an advertisement for scenteliminating clothing. Go figure.
|
RE: Scent-Loc worth it?
I own 2 sets and just play the wind. I don't plan to by anymore though.
|
RE: Scent-Loc worth it?
You have to remember.... Scent-Lok's carbon membrane is basically just peppered with activated carbon. It even says on the tag that you should try to only wash their garments a couple times throughout the season.
Military MOPP Suits (Chemical Suits) have a membrane with solid activated carbon and they're only rated for several washing PERIOD and, IIRC, 45 days of continuous use. How affective could Scent-Lok actually be if it has just a fraction of the absorbing material that our military grade suits have??? |
RE: Scent-Loc worth it?
It works great!!!! I will always use it. I dont think it takes 100% of your scent away, but it takes enough away that the deer dont spook. The only thing with it is that you have to re-activate it a bunch depending on how much you use it. I re-activate mine once a week and my facemask every 3 days. 2008 was the first year I went 100% scent-lok and did not get busted at all! Great product!

RE: Scent-Loc worth it?
Another $.02 and worth at least $.01. I am not saying it does not work. Just that I have never used this product. The hunters' reviews I read all over the place, and the talk around the camps I have been in over the past 5 years or so .... well just not enough positives for me to pay the extra $$$. I do try I have always tried my best to ease in and out as undetected as practical, use the wind to my advantage, set-up off the ground when it made sense to do so and was possible. This is the same-o, same-o any experienced deer hunter would do. And it has worked well. Do I have a wall of 150+ racks? No. I have only one. I do 90% of my deer hunting in SE Alabama on a free range , 3150 acres. We are loaded with good deer down this way, but just not many of this class down this way. Do I get my share every year? Yep, have for decades. So I'm either very lucky or very good. Knowing me the way I do, it ain't the skill !!!

RE: Scent-Loc worth it?
As an engineer or just using common sense, it seems to me that even if a garment held scent in from underneath, it would still have to be scentless itself. In otherwords, you may be holding in your body odor, but your scent-lok is still going to smell like your closet or your pickup or whatever the outerlayer has been exposed to.
Most people I know don't use anything except maybe some spray on stuff. I keep all my hunting clothes in tupperware with cedar shavings and pine needles, and I put on my top two layers after I get out of the truck and I am standing in the woods. If you do that and keep the wind in mind, you should to pretty good. |
RE: Scent-Loc worth it?
NO it doesnt work at all, It has been scientificallyproven time and time again that it does not work.
|
RE: Scent-Loc worth it?
Even if you think it doesn't work, the garments themselves are made with high quality. They are very well made and the camo patterns looks great. They don't fade.
I use em....but I get it cheap! ;) |
RE: Scent-Loc worth it?
I sometimes don't have any cedar or pine trees where I hunt (so bagging them up with pine and cedar isn't for me)but it's a good idea to keep your hunting clothes and bootsin a sealed container until you get to the woods. I thinkour breath is are worst scent problem, I try to use the wind in my favor and use scent killer before I walk to my stand. Works for me....and if you hunt State land you always have other people in the woods with you. LOL
My buddy puts his clothes in a bag with earth scent, man does he stink.. |
RE: Scent-Loc worth it?
I used to seal my clothes in rubbermaids, dress in the field, boughtsprays, soaps, etc. Worried about the foods I ate prior to hunting. However now the only time my clothes are in a rubbermaid are for storage or travel. I leave the house in myhunting dudseach time, but dress in layers to minimize any sweat up getting to my spot. I haven't bought a scent away products for years but do use regular unscented laundry soap and ivory bar soap. I eat whatever i want but do plan my hunting meals for the day or weeks events to ensure I stay hydrated and balanced. The one thing that hasn't changed, keep the wind in my favor!I haven't killed to many animals when the wind was on their nose and not mine, to me it's the quint essential. In terms of bow hunting i have killed far more animals without using scent control products then I ever did with them..KISS theory based mostly on common sense.
I have never owned a scent loc or similar suit and wouldn't spend the cake personally. That said confidence and mind setare big keys to success, so if you feel more confident in a product such as a scent loc then that's all that matters. If so the investment maybe more then justified. Good luck |

I still play the wind and never rely on one single thing to keep animals from smelling me. I just try to employ all the advantages available to me.... as long as they're legit.... |

BINGO!!! #1 thing and no matter what you do otherwise, you'll still be screwed if you arent playing the wind. |
RE: Scent-Loc worth it?
I tried it and had deer come 2 feet from me wanting to go through where I was sitting and I had the same results with spraying my cloths down. I think the key is what you prefer and using the elements to your advantage like some have mentioned. I have washed my cloths in pine needles and killed a 10 pointer at 9 in the morning. I went right after work in my work cloths and killed deer. I've also seen them smell me and run like the wind in my work cloths and unsprayed hunting cloths. I really do believe in the spraymethod, it's cheaper and had great results. I also think the camo pattern plays a great part, AD is the best for me. I've have hadthe wind blowing at them and they still walked right to me using the very trail I walkedto where I was standing. Let us know what you decide and your results.

RE: Scent-Loc worth it?
I cant say the stuff works as covering your scent, but i can say is scent loc is some of the most comfortable gear ive ever put on....I dont own it, but for comfort and quiet...its pretty nice.
If they made the stuff without the gimmic carbon in it i would buy it. |
RE: Scent-Loc worth it?
I believe that it can be affective only if you use it head to toe. If you only use the shirt and nothing else it won't work. You should even where the face mask too which covers your head in its entirety.

T.R. Michels posted this on his website today.
3/27/2009 I just heard that, on www.Justia.com, one of the people who filed a law suit against Scent Lok, stated in their deposition, that they filed suit because they had been to this (my Scent Lok / Activated Carbon Science, www.TRMichels.com/ActivatedCarbonScience.html) web page, and realized that they'd been ripped of - by Scent Lok. To find lawsuits against Scent Lok - type in the letters ALS. Anyone with a lick of sense, who actually reads what is on that page - and on page 2 - knows that activated carbon cannot work the way the manufacturers of hunting clothing say it can. Scent Lok Corporate Head's Deposition - Sealed At the same time I heard that ALS's corporate heads have also been deposed, but that their testimony has been sealed. What's with that … I thought we had a little legal precedent here in the USA called the "Freedom of Information Act". Why is it that the depositions of those suing Scent Lok are made public, but Scent Lok's lawyers have the depositions of the Scent Lok corporate heads sealed? Is that fair - to the hunting public? Hey Scent Lok Here is my offer to you. You have your deposition unsealed, and e-mailed to me, and I'll post it right here on my site at www.TRMichels.com/ActivatedCarbonScience.html - so the hunting public (those people who have paid for your products - and who pay your salary) - can get both sides of the story - and the truth. Anyone want to bet on whether they take me up on this offer of not? (3/27/2009 1:30 PM - I just sent this in an e-mail to Scent Lok [at [email protected]] , and to about 30 of the largest hunting magazine editors out there. So, neither Scent Lok nor those publications can say they know nothing about this.) God bless, T.R. |
RE: Scent-Loc worth it?
I use Hunter Specialties scent waffers and just wash my clothes and shower and I have killed all my deer that way. The scent waffers are fairly cheap and they last forever I have had mine for two years now and they work just as good as when i got them.

RE: Scent-Loc worth it?
Thanks for the information. I guess we will just have to let the legal system run its course for the final proof. With three seperate lawsuits filled it should tell us something.
There will be a brand new product out that has is being tested with dogs in Flordia and has been very effective so far where the carbon products have failed every test so far. Looks promising |
RE: Scent-Loc worth it?
What is the policy on hunting net concerning this topic. Can I get a moderator to explain that to me. As of today there are two more lawsuits that have been filed. One in Flordia and the other in Indianaand subpeonas have been mailed to the Scentlok and Scentblocker offices. I don't know if there is freedom to discuss this here but it seems to me the hunting public should be informed. So if a moderator reads this please send me a message. |

RE: Scent-Loc worth it?
I love that butt-out tool. As for Scent-Lok, I have a few but more of the Scent Blocker (I think). It is very good quality clothing. That's the main thing I like about it. As for the carbon, I don't know if it works or to what degree. I do know it hasn't done any harm and at times has seemed to actually help. I've also had deer close without it. When it's cold and I dress in the field, layer, and spray down its seemed pretty effective. I've had deer close and downwind wearing scent clothing and not got busted. There have also been times I was busted wearing it but I'm not sure it was from the scent clothing not working or from something else, ie: bow, pack, copenhagen, etc. I do know I like it and would wear it whether it worked or not. Several of my friends have the same opinion. I've never understood why people get so riled about it. If someone wants to use it that's their business. Nobody knows what happens in the field except the person there. Maybe there are guys out there that think there is some magic clothing or magic scent spray or whatever that will fool a deer 100%. I personally don't know anyone like that. The guys I hunt with know there's no such thing. But we all agree we like the scent clothing and have all had good experiences with it. None of us think its the only way to hunt and half the time we aren't using. I don't wear it in warm weather as it gets too hot. The light weight stuff isn't too bad but even it can get a little warm. IMO, sweat is the worst thing for hunting and about the worst thing you can do in scent clothing. I like to use it in cold weather because I don't have to layer as much and stay warm. I've got a 3-D set that you can take out the carbon lining and it's a great outfit for warmer weather. It just seems funny to me that someone would be suing. Every time I hear of that I picture someone who is either really gullible or not much of a hunter. Someone who went out and bought a brand new bow, new clothing, etc., got up in the morning, no shower, dressed in their gear, hopped in the car, stopped for gas and food, drove to their spot, went out in the woods, didn't see anything and then got pissed their new clothing didn't work. Or maybe they think they're going to hit the lottery. Doesnt' seem to be much of a class action suit though. You'd think if it was that bad and with all of it they've sold there would be tons of lawsuits. Who knows. Really isn't worth fretting over. Buy it or don't buy it. Pretty simple. If something sucks, it almost never sticks around. I've bought it more than once and will buy again. Same with everyone I know that owns it.
